is there a program that will automatically rename a file to track_artist_song name and will also replace spaces with underscore?

I would be interested in something like that myself. Renaming several thousand mp3s the old fashion way does not sound very appealing.

why would you want to go through and rename all your mp3's?

When almost I lost my harddrive I had to back up everything on DVDr in a hurry but I made a mistake and used ISO 9660 as character set (should have used the Joilet). It changed all my mp3 file titles to caps with underscores in between words.

I listen to the song, and then i rename them as ARTIST-SONGNAME.. and if i have an album, it is track-song and be in a folder for that album.. Thats what i like about www.allofmp3.com It names them the way you want them named when downloading and puts them in their own folder. Im sure their are other p2p networks that let you do it, but i havent messed around with it or tryed any that would do that.

Well to begin with the only ways to name an MP3 properly are artist-album-trackNumber-trackname, artist\album-trackNumber-trackName, artist\album\album-trackNumber-trackName or the sort of ok artist\ablbum\trackNumber-trackName and artist\album\trackNumber
NEVER include trackName before trackNumber and never use trackNumber without leading zero on <10, if you fail to heed my advice be prepaired for borkedness when you try to use an MP3 playback device that uses normal filesystems (basically all of them) I actually had to abbreviate some album names to prevent the CDFS filename putting ~xx into the filenames which kept borking my blind guardian album when burnt to mp3 CD,
as for burning files to CD My recommendation is to use a "store, no compression" RAR file with a recovery record to ensure that filenames are not screwed up (even joliet won't do the job on all files)

I use Bulk Renamer. It is a free program, and it is the shit! It will say, make all your words that are Caps turn into Title Case words, substitute characters for other charcters, all in one fell swoop. Of course, you can do a lot, like rename 50 files at one with one criteria. It is really awesome.
Check it out at google.com and type in Bulk Renamer jim whistler

TagScanner and MP3tag are two other great programs to fix ID3 tags and rename files.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Collideous, Tagscanner did the trick and fixed 90% of my mp3s in a few minutes. I need to fix the tags for the rest of them but its only a small fraction of the original job of renaming. Thanks dude. :)

What about members who have a large collections of mp3 files? What is the best way to check and see if they have the right ID3 tags? I have seen ppl post this question before so i thought i would bring it up again.
