I thought i might start a thread where people could post little known pieces of freeware that they find useful, but others might not know about.
So don't go posting stuff like winamp, AVG or firebird which everyone knows about.
here are a few that i like:
GuildFTPd (http://www.guildftpd.com/) The only free ftp server i know of. Easy to configure, but advanced enough to support more knowledgeable users. Still in pretty early development so it should be expected to advance a some.
40tude dialog (http://www.40tude.com/dialog/) This newsreader is incredible for a piece of freeware. I used to use forte agent, the most highly rated shareware newsreader, and this is similar except it is more fully featured (supports yENC, multiple servers etc). The best newsreader i have seen.
JAlbum (http://jalbum.net/) A tool for taking images and making albums out of them for publishing to the web. Very easy to use.

Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier
The program allows you to attempt recovery of files from a physically or logically damaged disk. The program will attempt to recover as much data as possible without giving up once an error is encountered. The program allows recursive copying of whole disks or simply a single file. This program isnt just for recovering damaged files it can be used for any copying. It is also useful for copying data when the copy process may be interupted at which stage you can simply use the resume function to continue.
i use it heaps...especially good for getting mp3`s off corrupt or scratched cds...

one of my favorite apps, reguardless of cost or popularity, is Kmp3. it is essentially the swiss army knife for mpeg audio files. it uses Freedb to rename tunes properly, has a manual ID3 tag editior, single or batch file renamer, name cleaner, tag remover, CD burner (might require 3rd party software, i dont know for sure), playlist creator/checker, file lister, duplicate remover, and a quality analysis among other things. one would expect this to be extremely bloated, but the download is less than 1 MB, and isn't that bad on memory either (6-13MB)
there is an 'expert' version, but i cant really find anything that would lead me to believe that it is actually any better than the normal version other than the fact that the expert version comes with support on their part.

http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/ Scanner is a very useful disk management tool, the exact totals for hard drive space are a bit sketchy at times but it shows an excellent relative size graph, great for figuring out where the hell all your hard drive space went (like when you dropped 90% of a big torrent in a weird place and forgot about it)

wtf is this? Do you even bother to read what a thread is about before you post in it? As i made crystal clear in the thread title and in the first post this is a thread about little known freeware. That means the apps you mention should be
A) Freeware, and
B) Little known
As a bunch of people have already pointed out not a single one of the apps you posted qualify on either respect.
Anyway, some good posts in this thread - apart from this idiocy by shawners.

Here are a couple more.
hiderpx (http://ptokax.eclub.lv/) cpugenius showed me this. Its a very simple app which allows you to view hidden windows. This can be useful in those situations where explorer crashes and some of your windows become hidden when you restart it.
setbrowser (http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/freeware/setbrowser/) another simple tool which only performs one function. In this case it forces the default browser on your pc. This can be useful if you have firefox or opera as default browser but some applications still try to open links with IE.

CodeStuff Starter: Starter is yet another startup manager, that allows you to view and manage all the programs that are starting automatically whenever Windows boots.
It lists all the hidden registry entries, as well as the common Startup Folder items as well. You can choose to safely disable selected entries, edit them or delete them altogether (if you know what you re doing). Expert users can even add their own entries.
Secondary purpose is to list all the running processes with possibility to view extended process' information (such as used DLLs, memory usage, thread count, priorities etc.), and to terminate selected process (even a Windows NT service, having enough access rights).
Very nice interface, and easy to use(y)

Yeah good, I sniffed him out earlier (not literally :tol2 ) but he denied it. I believe he is the same person as arsebiscuits and also cum recepticle...notice a certain common charm to the names? But was he here b4 with a different name...a long time user? Just curious, don't care too much.
Oh yeah little known free software.
XPKeygen (aka bluelist generator) and XP Key Viewer/changer :aim ....nearly posted the ed2k links....no...don't ban me, I didn't do it! These tools must have saved millions of individuals a few hundred notes and also without them 2/3 of the world's economies would still be trying to run XP without SP1. Hey I bought my XP Home edition, I even have the box and certificate. Makes my heart glow every time I install it. On my own PC. At home. With the original key. Really.
Or back in the world of software legitimacy...mostly:
Gordian Knot. It has to be the best DVD to DivX/Xvid tool I have used. With a good walkthrough guide it's a learning experience too. It's well known to people who rip DVDs but probably there are lots of people who would like to convert DVD to CD but get disappointed with stuff like DrDivx or put off by the really complex stuff.

Sorry to post twice together but this one is deserving of another post and I just remembered it too late.
ATI Tool.
If you own a ATI Radeon card this is the tool 4U. Here is the link http://atitool.ocfaq.com/ and here is a little blahblah from the site:
As you can guess from the name - ATITool is an overclocking utility designed for ATI video cards.
Design target is to write a light-weight application for the enthusiast - so no questionable registry tweaks. Sorry.
Main Features
No limits overclocking.
Finding maximum core and memory overclock by rendering into a Direct3D window and scanning the output for visual artifacts.
Artifact scanning mode for non-ATI cards - use together with a 3rd party overclocking utility.
Loading a predefined clock profile on Application/Windows startup.
Hotkeys that can be used any time to load clocks from a profile. 3D application detection (Direct3D 8, Direct3D 9, OpenGL) to overclock your video card only when required.
ATITool will only work on Windows 2000/XP/2003.The beauty of this tool is that it takes the hassle out of gradually increasing mem/core speeds by small percentages trying to find the max stable setting. The tool just starts ramping up the core/mem(do whichever you like 1st) until it detects artefacts. Then it starts working its way back in small increments until it finds a stable setting. Very neat concept and it works. With my cheap generic 9600 Pro I was able to boost the core speed by 20% and the memory speed by 40%.
If you have a 9200/9600/9800 you'll have found out that they have been designed not to be genuinely overclockable...the ATI drivers won't allow any permanent change to be made, everything is lost if you reboot....sucks right? Then get the softmod drivers from here http://softmod.ocfaq.com/index.php and then use the ATI Tool. All this stuff is free and apart from invalidating your warranty it's worry free and easy to use. Oh yeah it actually works.
