Hawk : if you really want to know, your responses was faster, but hunter's would have been more usefull. First, I'm on winpro and I and there is a mistake on your web pages, I figured out I had to follow winhome's directives. And, since my pc is in french, I had a difficulty going through the operations and wasnt 100% sure I unchecked the correct thing. I did it using your directives but checked to make sure with hunter's link and I knew I was correct in seconds.

Conclusion : you were of no help! I would have been better of with only hunter's post.

Thanks anyway. I hope this does not make you too sad or jalous.

I didn't read all the pages linked but i have to say.... IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE MESSING WITH WINDOWS SERVICES USE SERVICES.MSC aside from giving basic descriptions it also won't allow you to disable something that will screw over your computer, msconfig will let you disable critical services.

Good advice, but if you're using windows xp pro, use GPedit.msc:

Local Computer Policy >> Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Windows Components >> Windows Messenger >> Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to run and enable it.

Click OK, and then quit the snap-in.

shoot the messenger will take care of his messenger spam, but messenger spam is a sign that ports are open and exposed to the internet which most definately should not be open.

I also recommend that downloadalot visits shields up while he is at grc.com and establishes which ports are open. I bet if 135 was open then the netbios ports 137-139 are open also, and possibly other dangerous ports such as 445 and 1900.

Downloadalot should take steps to close or stealth these ports. A good firewall is definately a must.
