Panasonic demonstrates first dual-layer 50 GB Blu-Ray disc

According to www.doom9.org, this month at CeBit, the world´s largest computer trade show, Panasonic demonstrated the first dual layer Blu-ray disc , purported to be capable of storing up to 50 GB on a single side of a Blu-ray disc. A standalone dual layer Blu-Ray writer is due to be released in Japan as early as August this year.

Very intresting miniver. I would assume that it will have a pretty high price tag.. and all these DVD players are going to have to support multi-format from different manufacturers.. or movie studios have to make them in different formats.

Blueray is not backward compatible with DVD, or anything else. Start saving your pennies and make room in your home for another consumer box and find some space on your PC for another drive.

I'm just going to ignore it until I win the lotto. Actually when I win the lotto I'll still ignore it cos I will just buy movies. Yeah one day.

Amazing, the disc is larger then my slave drive by 10.. the prices for them have to be high. I cant understand why we cant store more data on a Laserdisc, since its so big and all then just the movie.

why would you want a disc as large as a laserdisc
