clean install the whole thing but i want to back up
the whole thing once i clean install the OS + softwarz on either
a CD or another Drive!
so if i run into a situation like this i can simply restore frm back up
and dont have to go through this whole process of installing the
OS and all the software i use!
i want suggestions on wht freewarz r there for this purpose and

Get used to it !
The saving grace is now that you get a system the way you need it to be, you will save grief on the reimaging etc, but, you will NOT avoid it.
Lets split this topic in to 2 parts, the first posts should focus on getting your old stuff saved, and the new O/S PROPERLY configured.
Then, and only then, say after page 3, we will kick in the "use this software" suggestions, or you will just end up getting ahead of yourself, and having shit for a Restore Cd. This will also allow the more experienced members to find current links for guides etc to help you.
Now, be patient, and take notes.

Great, but just geting the O/S properly configured, patched, etc etc wwill take a day.
So . . what are the questions here that no one is asking yet?
How about this for starters, "What do I need to know in order to install a new copy of XP, and get it ready for P2P use?"
anyone . . .?
Do I have all of my driver?
Do I need to repartition my drives?

Where will I back stuff up to?

Not going against Krell, but always burn off all of the drivers needed, before installing your OS. he taught me this well, just incase XP doesnt do the job for you. Always back things up, your drivers, and all software. Im to the point now that i have layed out my disks in order with all i need to get things up and running.

Right, you have 2 small drives, each one has 2 partitions.
What you need to make certain that you have ahead of time, is the SP1 and key changer\viewer, your firewall software, and all your personal stuff saved off of C: drive.
Reboot to the CD rom, and when you hit setup XP, select the C: partition, and install XP, format with NTFS.
UNPLUG YOUR line going TO your broadband modem, so no data can leave your house, BUT . . keep that sucker hooker up to the USB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reinstall windows, then change the key, then SP1, then go back online.
Do the Windows updates.
Spend time configuring your settings, Services, etc.
THEN STOP
cuz your going to cease to think of yourself as the administrator on your machine, and delete users etc.

yup iam certain i have nothing on C drive!
my winxp copy already has sp1.
my F drive is pretty big abt 70 gig it has everything on it!
one more thing i have ZOneAlarm firewall and i saw a post
on ZP tht VSMON.exe constantly leaks memory so do
u suggest any other FW or u want me to stick to ZA?
i simply use the SAfeallstart.reg file which i downloaded
frm www.blackviper.com to configure the services
u think tht's good enough or there more services i can
turn off safely! i dont run any server or anything all i use
internet for p2p and browsing!

i just run aida32 to identify my sound and video boards, and then download the drivers to suit my os, and those boards. then just burn them off to be used if needed, as xp is usually very good at finding them. Always keep your drivers, on a well labled disk.

This is a quick post, im sick, i got the funk.
I use Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, and import IP Block lists in to the advanced rules.
Compu's gonna post a guide for you, churn it for a day or so, get the software, see if you understand the process, its pretty easy.
cheers

When you get a clean install of Windows XP and updated drivers (and nothing else), you should make a ghost image of your C:\ partition. Norton Ghost 2003 makes it very painless. It will probably fit on 2 CDs and then you have a handy backup of a clean install that you can restore in a few minutes if necessary.
Here's a thorough guide for Ghost:
