I apologize if this has been asked before, but is there a way to use bittorrent privately or mask your ip. Does peerguardian help or is there something better?
Thanks in advance

No, you can't, or at least not easily. There are much better programs for private sharing.
Check carefully the facts on anyone that offers to hide your IP. Chances are it doesn't. For BT, best bet is a proxy, but it is easier said than done:

Peerguardian won't help make it private. It is supposed to help block IPs from people who are gathering information or trying to sue users. We have had "does it work?" question discussed a million times. The conclusion is probably better than nothing. No one knows.

Yes you are able to use bittorent privately with your friends. I tested it out along time ago with a friend as a test. Basically you need to have the proper information from your friend though.
YOu need their ip address, the torrent they will send you, the hash value I believe as well. I was able to download from my friend privately. Like I said it was along time ago that I did that as a test.
If you really want to do this you can, because no one will no about the torrent file that your friend is sharing because its between you two.
Whatever way you decide to do it, it should work, but my friend and I who tested this sort of know what we were doing because he did research on this.
if you really wanna share files between you and your friend use icq because you can resume files on icq as well.
Like I said u can share torrents privately. I have done it but it was so long ago. Follow some of the steps I described above though.

Going against my first post about it not being easy, in Azureus -> Configuration -> IP Filter, you can type in your friends IPs and tick the "ALLOW These Ranges" box.

hmm *remembers this thread* and thats another reason why I like bittorent, because you can even be behind a network and still upload to your friends. This program is network friendly as well and totally decentralized and great to use with your friends or friend privately.

I use DC to share with people I know personally. 1 on 1 super fast connections that can't be traced. Just make a private hub with your pals and you're good to go.
