Music reccomendations?

I really am starting to like the swing/big band genre of music, but im not really sure what to get. ive got some louis armstrong, and frank sinatra, and on the more modern side, ive gotten some brian setzer stuff. i like what i have so far, but i was wondering of any of you at ZP have any reccomendations?

what i'd really appreciate would be some 'best of' compilations so that i can decide which artists i like the most, then get more of their stuff. of course, beggars cant be choosers, so ill take any info i can get.

My father played in some swing bands in the late 40's. Check out Eddie Fisher, Jhonny Roslie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorse. For female swing artist check out the Andrew Sisters. Also goto WWW.allmusic.com. Just put in the gendre Swing band, etc and it will give a history and some top band and artist.

i already tried allmusic, and it was helpful, but it really didnt help me decide. there were so many artists, but i didnt want to dowload all of them, so thats why i came here. for once, im actually looking for a somewhat biased opinion... not just a 'state the facts' type of suggestion.

anyways, i will check out some of those artists you listed. thanks.

Some tunes are: String of Pearls, Pennsylvania 6-5000(that is a old style phone number) American Patrol, Tuxedo Juncktion, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. There even was a very famous comdey swing band that satired famouse tunes of the time called Spike Williams and his band. Most of your real popular swing band groups were around from the early 40's to the ealry 50's. Also there was a terrible comdey starring John Belushi called 1941. A comdey about WWII and the sound track is full of old hit swing tunes. Check out the soundtrack on amg.

i suppose i should have made my request a little more clear :p i meant a link to the '1941' soundtrack page on AMG.

not only can i not find it on AMG, but ive had SLSK searching for upwards of 1/2 an hour with no tangible results. maybe there is a different name?

then by all means, go ahead. i never said i didnt like those styles, or that i dont listen to them. however, i also happen to like swing/big band, and i dont listen to much of that. hence the problem.

I don't know if you like hip-hop or anything but if you do then check out anything by Jin, Joe Budden, Twista or Kanye West. Sorry if I didn't help you. Hip-hop is all I know.

If that's what the man's into, why rain on his parade?

Back to topic--Glen Miller and Count Basie would be worth checking out. There have been some excursions into swing in rock--Ricki Lee Jones has done a couple numbers--and Quincy Jones. And sometimes DixieLand music crosses paths with swing. I'll do a little research and get back to you WonderBoy.

not to be offensive or anything, but you seem somewhat narrow minded when it comes to music. just because you dont like a certain style doesn't mean it is less deserving. while i personally dont like most hip hop, atleast the newer stuff anyway, that doesnt mean that hip hop is lesser than somthing that i do like. there's an addage that goes "one man's trash is another man's treasure." keep that in mind when it comes to opinions.

try the cherry poppin` daddies...saw them live a couple of years ago...they do an incredible live version of glenn millers` "in the mood"

http://www.cdvalue.com/movie/1941.html You also can sample the tracks of it, if you have realplayer or windows player(check track swing,swing,swing)I did see that some of the songs that they play in the movie are not listed on the soundtrack (about 4). You might just rent the dvd and put up with the movie and hear some of the music to if you can stomache the story yeeeeeeeech! Hope this helps.

Just because you don't like hip-hop doesn't mean that it's garbage. I don't like alot of the other kinds of music that others mentioned in this thread but you don't see me going around trashing it. Let people listen to what they want. To each his own.
