Playing download movies on TV...

Newbie question! I'm UK based but have a multiregion and NTSC compatible DVd player. Whats happening is I download a movie, transfer to Nero, burn a disc and when I play it on my DVD player the picture is purple? I've downloaded Kazaa-Lite codecs et al. What am I doing wrong? Cheers C

What type of files are you burning to DVD? Are you downloading DVD's and then burning them or are you burning divx and xvid stuff to DVD? Have you tried using any other software?

I'm burning all types of file. Haven't tried DIVX/XVID because I'm not sure what/how I need to do it. A few old classics and a few pop videos. I'm downloading, then burning. Also old VHS converted files. As I say total newbie.

I am not sure, but I think you have to encode them first. Try http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

Don't use DivxMpeg-4 unless you have a divx capable player or you're just going to make another coaster. You need to reencode to mpeg-2. Use Tmpgenc available at www.tmpgenc.net. They have a free-trial version with all features open for 30 days, unless of course you travel back in time after you install which then of course it would work forever:) Then load your files into nero and Burn, Burn, Burn!


P.S. Expect a new thread/guide on this topic due to a apparent lack of knowledge.

You can burn the avi as VCD (you need to check your DVD manual and see if it plays VCDs) which less of hassle encoding. However the downside ia that the quality is not as great as DVD quality burn.

for quality's sake i would stick with mpeg2 format and tmpgenc. burning vcd's when you have a dvd player is kind of like riding your bike to a job that's 50 miles away, when you own a car. burn the movies to dvd-rw first to make sure their playable.

Really appreciate this advice. Just so you know where I am now:

Downloaded a DIVX program, Wouldn't open so now downloading an app that can open it. Hopefully it will be ace (pun intended). I guess then the next stage is download a divx movie (I think I'll go for a small file to save time in case I go wrong - and the CDR-RW is a great idea). Then If I understand the above (sorry some conflicting views and I don't fully understand the differences - tho it looks like my Pioneer 656 DVD player isn't DIVX compatible so mpeg2 format and tmpgenc looks like the only route forward!) I have to convert it it to mpeg2. Then burn it. This really isn't as straightforward as all the hype makes out is it?!

Note: Encoding files takes a Looooooong time...be prepared
best thing to do is just leave it on overnight.

Hi all,

Sorry it took so long but success! MPEG no problem and for DIVX picked up a cheap Yamada so away I go. Now just got work out again how to fit a 1 & 1/2 movie on to a 80 min CDR. I'll get there! Thanks all for advice!
