Help, please! - eMule brings down the router!

Hello all --

I am wired to an Alcatel 270PR ADSL modem/router. I punched through the firewall alright, as well as configured the NATs (up/download is no problem, I've already served and received GBs of data).

Unfortunately, sometimes it seems I can't use eMule for more than ten minutes before the router locks up and the red alarm LED goes off.

I've tried using NetLimiter (I thought I was choking the router), as well as limiting the amount of connections the mule allowed. Nothing has improved the stability.

Does anyone have any clues?

i dont have an alcatel i got netgear but had the same prob its due to the ammount of conections emule makes go into preferences then connection and try turning down the number of sources per file and connection limits until you find the max connections your router can handle hope this helps

Okay, it seems to be working now - not because of lowered connections allowed, but I shut down the Norton auto-protect.

With norton enabled, there was a peak of inactivity every 50 seconds or so in all communications (according to NetLimiter). Now it's gone. And mule's been up for an hour now. We'll have to wait and see if that was the problem.

This is good, I have had the same problem with eMule and Bit Torrent, but maybe this is the fix I needed. I use a Netgear router, but I didn't think it had anything to do with the problem, I just thought it was my cable modem, because it always seems to drop the connection, but maybe it is just my Norton Internet Security. I am going to keep my fingers crossed and try it. Thanks a lot!

PS: I am curious, what option did you change in Norton, I don't want to completely disable my Firewall and Anti-virus, can you tell me exactly what you did?

For now, I neutered it entirely. If things behave themselves, I'll lift the restrictions in the future. (Note that I don't have firewall installed, just AV. You may be able to use the firewall without any problems.)

BTW- I did experience a loss of network activity even after I disabled Norton, but I lowered eMule connections to 80 and it hasn't happened since -- the whole thing is still in trial period for now.

I remember reading that Norton crashes eMule in the eMule forums, but I never paid any attention to it because eMule itself never stopped functioning. Here's the thread:

No, routers should not lock up under load. If one does its faulty. The lastest firmware for netgear DG819's is a considerable improvement but still locks ocasionally.
Don't buy netgear equipment.

I was having this problem before I bought my Netgear router, so I knew it wasn't a router problem. I just bought the router when me and my roomates decided to go wireless. I always thought it was a problem with my cable modem, because I would always have to power it on and back off again in order to get the internet to work. I may be wrong and it still may be a hardware issue with my modem (but that just seems weird). Also, is there anywhere in Shareaza to limit the connections. Because it is BitTorrent that I am downloading from the most, and I do good to hold a connection for 10 minutes before I have to reset my modem. Anyway, I use Shareaza for my BitTorrent client, but it has the same problem with eMule and any other BitTorrent client that I use. It's weird though, I could stay on FastTrack all night without a problem, it is just on these other networks that is gets jacked up. But I will try the disabling of the NAV, as much as I hate to do it.
