Hey Everybody:

This is my first posting on this site. Most of you seem to be very computer-savvy people, so I was hoping I could get some help on a computer problem I've been having. I tried to download Internet Explorer 6.0 on the Microsoft Windows website to upgrade my Internet to 6.0 from 5.0 that I had before. I followed the instructions as it had said and I ended up being downgraded to Internet Explorer 4.0 and now my Internet won't work!!! Luckily for me, I have my second computer, which is slower but very reliable and that still runs on the Internet just fine (as you can see). So, my problem is how to get back my Internet 5.0, if not back to Internet Explorer 6.0 and also how to restore my Internet connection. I use Kazaa and AOL and since yesterday, both are unable to connect through. Everytime I boot up my computer I get the following message: C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL as being the source of the problem of my computer. It also says that "there was an error in the internal Explorer extensions". Does anybody know what these two messages mean and how I can fix my Internet program on my computer so that it will run OK??? I have an IBM computer if that helps and I also am using an Internet hub because of my two computers and am connected to the university Ethernet network. Please reply if you know what I should do. Thanks.

Whoa there!!!! First things first.

Boot up the broken PC. click out of the error message and go to start>settings>control panel and go to add/remove. From there find NewDotNet or however you spell it and uninstall it.

Does the computer your using have a cd burner? if so, download the program Ad-aware www.lavasoftusa.com and burn it to a cd and install it on the other computer, from there run a scan of your system to remove all spyware traces.

That should fix your new.net problem, and perhaps your net problem. If it does, you can simply update IE and Windows by opening up IE and going to tools>windows update and following the prompts.

Googling NEWDOT~2.DLL will get you to http://www.newdotnet.com/. Scroll down the page and read through the Uninstalling NewDotNet instructions. Taking a brief look at the page it's no wonder your connection isn't working.

1) use ad-aware. also, use a good firewall; i'd go against zonealarm, norton and mcafee: a firewall must be finely tunable to be effective.

2) try opera http://www.opera.com as a browser and eudora http://www.eudora.com instead of outlook, if u use it. if you wanna be sure, try to block access to the internet explorer and outlook folders for everyone - that way, most virii and trojans can't affect you.
some (microsoft, for the most part) sites don't work well with opera, but you can always enforce own css settings, which will help in many cases.
