first it was phoenix. that wasnt good enough. then came firebird. all was good. that is, until the 'Firebird relational database open-source development project' decided that mozilla firebird wasd too confusing for their cusomers. long story short, it now has a third name: "Firefox". along with the new name comes version 0.8, making the application one step closer to its final verison.

Just a note for extension freaks who like to use google.com as their homepage..... DO NOT INSTALL THE GOOGLE TASKBAR EXTENSION. It will not load google.com as your homepage. Even if you disable it, a homepage that is google will NOT WORK. It will just sit there loading. This is actually me speaking from experience.

Besides, it's ugly.

I have been using the Mozilla Phoenix-Firebird-Firefox (whew .i hope they're done with all the name changes) since version .6 and I love it. I installed the latest version .8 firefox on Monday and it also works great . Its definitely faster on my PC than IE and has no pop-ups plus many great extensions you can install to customize the browser as you wish. I do have the Google Toolbar installed with Mozilla Firefox and had it before with Firebird and it always worked great for me.

On thing to avoid however in the settings :

Toolbar Options - do not select the google labs keyboard shortcuts !!! If you do, your browser will hang and take forever to load a page. As long as this option is not enable, no problem. Potato , maybe this is the problem you had . Otherwise a great browser .

Maybe.... I still thought it was ugly (the googlebar extension).

It won't connect!!

You might want to uninstall and delete the folder and reg entries and re-install.

Also I saw there were some install help when I downloaded. I have yet to install it but I have a older version and it did say something about older plugins etc. being incompatible.

I go back and read the info.

peace

That's cool too. IE6 is getting less and less use.

Well, I installed firefox, then installed the AbBlock extension, or, at least that's what it told me (installation complete, restart firefox, blah blah blah).

AdBlock is nowhere to be found in Tools>Options>Extensions.

It's as though it doesn't exist (I've tried many times to reinstall it. I've tried a complete uninstall of firefox, and such).

Even though it says otherwise, I'm beginning to think the AdBlock extension doesn't work with FireFox.

I think maybe I'll give the regular Mozilla browser a try.

Adblock works perfect with my firefox.. i just blocked the ad here!

AdBlock is nowhere to be found in Tools>Options>Extensions.

Don't worry Ken, it is not what you might think it is. You have to go to the ad, right-click on it, and choose block ad, and then it only blocks that ad if it comes from the exact same URL again...which they change almost everytime you load a page. So it's really rather useless unless there is one page that uses the exact same ad everyday...also, this doesn't work with any flash or moving ads.

Also, I have used Firefox, MyIE2, Avant, and Opera. Out of these, I was a die hard Firefox fan, but in the last 3 days, I converted over to the Opera broswer. It is just a lot more customizeable, and perfect one you register it to rid of the ad...and I am sure you all will find a way to rid of it without paying for it. Anyway, Firefox is great, MyIE2 is most like IE as far as how it displays pages, but it is too sensetive to drags and clicks. Firefox has a problem displaying some pages due to poor coding (on the webpage design, not Mozilla) most of the time, but nonetheless, it still has problems. Opera is great, fast, and you can make it look however you want. Also has all the built-in search bars you want, and I have found when having Opera, Firefox, and MyIE2 all open with 3 tabbed sessions, they all use about the same amount of resources.

Once again, I have no reason to be biased against any of these, they are all better than IE, but I feel Opera is best and most customizeable. Firefox is great too and has developed an almost cult following, but it still needs to get worked on in some areas. Just try them out, see what you like.

Tom Spring, PC World

Microsoft has won the browser wars, but a battle is raging for the runner-up spot and one of the contenders just got refreshed.

The Mozilla Foundation has renamed and updated its Firebird browser, now called Firefox 0.8. Improvements include a download manager, the capability to view offline Web pages you've previously visited, and support for a growing number of browser add-ons called Extensions.

During a couple days of surfing with Firefox, I found the beta version stable enough to recommend it to anyone interested in an alternative to Internet Explorer. Firefox is downloadable now in a free preview release. A final 1.0 launch is scheduled to be available this summer from Mozilla.org.

Less Geek, More Chic

The revamped browser is slick, fast, lean, and versatile. It is the first browser release from the open source organization that is aimed at "non-techies," according to Mitchell Baker, president of the Mozilla Foundation.

"We think people deserve a better browser," Baker says. She says Firefox gives Web surfers a choice of a free Windows browser that won't tax their patience or their PC's system resources.

Firefox is compatible with the Windows, Linux (news - web sites), and Mac operating systems. It is a 6.2MB download.

You have to go to the ad, right-click on it, and choose block ad

I do not have an "block ad" selection in the context menu.

I have the traditional Mozilla "block images from this server", but nothing, nada, to do with AdBlock.

I guess i'll be sticking with IE and AdShield. I like the Mozilla browsers (I don't like Opera), but AdSheild is just too useful.

Oh how I wish it were compatible with Mozilla.

Why is that funny? He is right, it is better. Give me 1 advantage of another browser over Opera other than open-source.

I prefer Opera myself, though a good deal of it is probably inertia. Been using it for several years, and it does everything I want it to. Last time I tried Firefox I saw no reason to switch, but then it was still called Phoenix. Probably time to give it another shot. And it would be nice to have a browser without an ad window without having to pay or becoming a criminal ;)
