More info would be nice. Like does your friend have any anti-virus software installed, and if so is it up to date. Has he installed any software recently. Have you tried using Google and searching for the error message that you recieve?

They've probably got the MSBlast virus (AKA the Blaster Worm). Take a look here (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html), scroll down for removal instructions.

Do what he said, and get your friend to get some antivirus software you can get viruses just for surfing the web!

Have your friend run an online virus scan here are a few options, all of which are free:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

I would also suggest you have him install an anti-virus software there are many out there that cost nothing and have regular updates. I personally use Ontrack System Suite. I also agree with what nasrules said about the Blaster worm here is a link for the patch that should take care of future problems http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp . I suggest he runs the onlins scan and if it finds the virus that nasrules mentioned or a variant of it just have hime follow the instructions for removal. Once he has fixed said problem make a restore point and then install an anti-virus software.

Ah, yeah, thanks for that link Greylin, I forgot about the patch (duh!).

It must be Blaster, that's exactly what it does.
