This is no joke and no piracy. It's a one year (360 day) trial.
I ran across
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/downloads/upgrade.asp
Basically, this only will run on a 64 bit processor from AMD like the Opteron or Athalon.
(Intel has no 64 bit processor yet).
All you need is an email address and to give Microsoft your information on the order page.
Heck, I don't even have a 64 bit processor yet, but I'll still get this copy of Windows XP 64 bit extended edition. I may buy a Athalon 64 or Opteron 64 sometime later in the year :cross

Yeah, hurry up and download the beta version because I'm sure the gold version won't be on P2P the day it comes out.

Yeah, it probably everywhere already.
At least Microsoft's servers are faster than P2P (and more reliable).

I would download it and burn it to a CD and save it until I get or ever have a 64-bit processor...
BLAH...
(Intel has no 64 bit processor yet).
...BLAH
Ever heard of the Intel Itanium (http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/itanium2/index.htm)?

Good idea. But does the trial start when the d/l is complete? Or does it start when it's installed?

Well, intel may have the Itanium, but it won't work with this Windows XP.
From the Microsoft website
Important: Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems is only compatible with 64-bit AMD Opteron– or Athlon 64-based computers. It cannot be successfully installed on 64-bit Intel Itanium–based systems
