Was wondering if anyone else may be experiencing this ... Only had XP pro clean installed for 3 days, worked fine first 2 ... then when I got on today I started having problems with windows failing to close the port when I disconnect. It connects first time after boot A OK! Then afterward it throws a dice as to whether or not it wants to behave, if it behaves it removes the icon from the tray BAM like that! N I can reconnect. But sometimes it hangs around ... and EVENTUALLY goes ... and wowie, when I go to connect again I get a nice little error ............. Took me 4 times, and going into the connection and modem settings (changing nothing) to make sure it was set up right then trying again and WOW! I got on this time ... It replies when I query it too ...

I dont know this for sure but I think it might be one of these:

1. You need new drivers for the modem.

2. Your modem periodically disconnects(can be due to noise on the line or bad service) and when it tries to reconnect with the other end, it will not listen to commands sent to it until it reconnects.

3. Your modem is FUBAR.

Can't think of anything else....have any more info for us?

Modem is brand new, new drivers. And seems to dial out fine in linux ... tried it just then. And dials out fine 100% of the time on first boot in windows, sometimes 2nd and 3rd. Its getting picky. Main prob is my ISP disconnects me every 4 hrs, it works fine as far as drop outs are concerned ... not a single onet yet, and always connect around 50k, its after that disconnection that when I try to reconnect I get the error ... next time it pops up for me I'll post it ........... Anyhow its 5am and I can't be bothered thinking about it anymore for now!

Uninstalled and reinstalled the device and everything dialed O.K this time. Will have to wait and see if it can handle reconnecting ...

BTW, this was the error:

Opening port...

Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device).

Even though I know it was all connected cause I could still query it and get a response ;)

Seems to be behaving now ... still getting used to XP putting settings for the same thing in 20 different places. I set my max connect speed to the same (in modem config and connection/modem config) and it seems to be okay now ...

It's a weird sounding problem...but winXP might be right, your modem might be farked-up
