I agree! Thanks again andrew!
I'm 269 in their queue line, but seems to be going down pretty fast. Either way, it's free and worth the wait. :heart

Oh boy, I'm #293 in line.
I'm glad I'm on cable and can afford to wait in long lines.
This reminds me of an Overnet or WinMX queue, but it cycles through a lot faster.

Sweet, in the time to post my last reply the queue went down by 10.
I should be downloading in no time.
Now if only Microsoft would have such a "free" day.

Finally, the download started. About 550 megabytes in one file.
You don't have to download them all (I don't need a Spanish version).
The FTP servers is only doing about 81k/sec. It should be done in a couple of hours.
I haven't tried Lindows since version 3.0. Let's see if 4.5 can beat Xandros 2.0 (I doubt it).

Yeah, it should take some time. Once the page appeared with the links, I chose the FTP link and stuffed it into Getright.
I sure can't complain about 82kbps.
I used to be on dial-up. It would have taken days at around ~3kbps :bling

Im on DSL, Lindows is based on Debian which is my favourite distro. I can't wait to try it. 14 in front of me now!!!!
This was a very smart thing for Lindows to do. Alot of people dont like it simply because they have to pay for it, but if people try it and like it, they might start spreading the word and attracting costumers.
Quick thought:
Since we got a full price rebate doesn't it count as if we had purchased it, which should mean we also get support? The "all-nighter" has kicked in which makes me think stuff like this.
Update (1AM PST, 02/02/04 [weird 02 + 02 = 04]):
Now downloading at 161KBPS...

Screen shot from developer version, which states that it includes e-support. If we got a $59.99 rebate, that rebate must cover support.

They're still gonna make money hand-over-foot from people who subscribe to that "click-n-run" service, so I would classify this as brilliant marketing.
Also, those servers mus be spillin' them files, because I logged back on this morning and I'm only 56 in lline.
A question. Do I have to be here to initiate the download, or will it begin automatically (And I'll just have to give it a location)? I might be in class when my place comes up.
Ooh...55....(^_^)

Haven't the guys at Lindows ever heard of bittorrent? this is the kind of thing that BT truely kicks ass at, hundreds of people DLing the same huge file, as long as they protect access to the tracker it wouldn't be much of a risk in terms of additional copies getting out

Not big deal... yep, it's cool alternative OS... but Xandros v.2 is much better... Lindows could NOT even detect my sound board (nVidia - nForce)... Even Mandrake and slackware DO detect it...
if you want/need something "Lindows-like" and free (and much better, I think...) you should try out Lycoris Desktop/LX (www.lycoris.com)... and download it going to (www.lycoris.com/download)... I really like it... but Xandros is still my best bet.

What makes Lindows so much more special than Debian Linux 3.0r2 using KDE 3.1.4 that I am using?

Lindows is made for newbies... it's dumb-proof... anyone can have it running with less than 10 clicks (really)...
To be able to run Debian you need to be more tech-savy... and not everyone has enough linux and computer knowledge to install it...
Anyway, Xandros and lycoris are almost as easy as lindows but have better compatibility.

I used Lycoris Desktop/LX back when it was free. Now, they've essentially gone the way of Lindows and Xandros. The OS from Lycoris is still a free download, but the DEVtools CD (which is essentially required to do anything with Lycoris is pay only).
It's like getting a free car without an engine.

Ohh... I didn't know that... thanks for the advice... (I still have the first version of lycoris (named Redmon Linux) installed on a P-II system and it works flawlessly, much better than Lindows... I havent downloaded the new versions since I can freely "live-update" my "old" lycoris OS)
Thanks again, RJ

Last time I used Lindows (3.2 I think), it was nothing to brag about.
First install, it fucked up my windows partition (even though they were on separate partitions). Had to format to get either to work, otherwise it would spew an endless stream of "LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL"
Second install, only OS on the drive, it loaded. It was slow, and crashed every few minutes.
Third install, same as the second. Very slow, unresponsive most of the time, and just overall it sucked. I wasn't too impressed.

I think it's the Xandros powering Lindows that's the problem. Xandros completely fucked up my whole 80 gig hard drive, though I only installed it on one 20 gig partition.
Every time I run a program like partitionmagic, it complains of some sort of "bad disk geometry" or some crap like that. I know I'll eventually have to wipe it clean and reformat.
I'm glad I have enough CD-Rs on hand to backup all of my mp3s on my other partitions. I'd hate to loose those.

NEWBIE ALERT:
I'm using Mandrake. Is that a good distro to start off with or Lindows? Also what file system do you recommend: ReiserFS, Ext3fs, UFS, or XFS?

Search Google for "Knoppix"
It's basically a bootable version of Linux with gobs of apps already installed. You can't logon root and be able to change time settings or fuck with the OS in any really big way (deleting shit in the ramdrive it makes/ect), but you can install it via a command line upon bootup. I forget it at the moment so just google that info as well.
You can also try "Phat Linux" which is basically Linux made to be installed and run on Fat32 (maybe NTFS now?).
Don't install any new OS on a drive in which you have high priority data that's not backed up! Even the experts can make a mistake...
