I use windows 98 SE and have ADSL .
I use winMX for sharing files,
and after a number of minutes/hours
My connection becomes completly num.
the only way to continue and surf the internet
is to reboot the machine.
this is a living hell for someone
swapping big files who needs to have a stady connection
I beg for your help,I could only find clues
that this is somewhat related to FAT32
and that there is a patch out there,
I have no Idea...
PLEASE HELP!
LostGuy.

I don't really think that's a fat32 issue. I've experienced that in a win2k OS with NTFS. It is almost surelly usb related try getting the most recent updates for your OS.

do you have this problem with other p2p apps?
well we need more info about your system setup to help, but here is somethings that cannot hurt and maybe help.
use secondary connection, change your ports by going into winmx options and adding a 1 at the beginning of the port settings.
does your computer or the winmx application freeze or is it just your internet connection is gone or stalled?

Yeah use secondary connection, because a primary has to allow others to connect to you and it takes some extra bandwith to do so. Also besides adding the 1s, on the bandwith throttle change incoming to 10000000 and check the box next to it. Change the throttle process interval to 50ms instead of defaullt of 250ms. hope this helps you get going and get fast speeds.

I didn't test it with other p2p apps,
but it appears to be a known issue
for adsl+win 98 SE users.
I'm always using a secondary connection,
because I'm behund a firewall(no that's not the reason-I've checked).
I know of a patch out there, just don't know how to get it.
and when it happens,
my connection dies on me.
nothing freezes,I can even disconnect
and reconnect to the internet but nothing will happen
until I reboot...

you are a adsl consumer, so u are capped for uploads at 128 kb divide that by 8 and you get 16 kbs up load bandwidth. now, i dont know if you know this or not, but if ya uploading at the full 16 kbs and downloading at the same time, it will consume your bandwidth dramatically. I believe you should allow only 8 kbs a second upload, to avoid the bandwith bottle neck. this should resolve the problem, and you will be able to surf the web at the same time. hope this works for you.

I think you guys are missing the point here,
it's not an issue of bandwith
it's about a normal connection
that all of a sudden goes dead for no reason.
then,when I shut down winMX
my connection still is DEAD.
I can only upload 9 kbps and download 50-60 kbps
but the thing is I usually dispense about 5-6 kbps.
so that's not it,
well....I guess no one has ever come across this problem
and I'm stuck with it forever... :green4

that is why I asked for some more information about your problem.
It sounds like a problem with your dsl configuration.
How long have you been running with this dsl set up?
apparently you have no problems with other p2p?
have you used any other p2p app successfuly?
does this happen at any other time ever in the past?
configuring dsl can be a bear. I had a problem like yours and it took 2 months to figure it out.
I called isp, 2 techs came and I have experience but no one could figure it out.
It finally turned out to be one rather hidden setting.
all we can do is try and go step by step.
answer the questions and we will keep going till we can solve it.
if you look at the dsl configuration it goes on and on...
for me it was simply enable dhcp

I've had DSL for a few months now,
My ISP did my settings for me,
as I said I didn't try long downloads over at kazaa
I really am more of a WinMX guy...

sorry to tell you most isp techs barely know what they are doing.
I had over the course of a year and a half about 4 techs visit and I had one guy out of those 4 that actually knew what he was doing.
I took some classes at a local college to study networking and the teacher didn't know half about he was talking about.
good luck

I also have trouble with WinMX. I run Win98SE and when I fire up WinMX, try to do a search and then, for instance, right click on a song I want, something strange happens - windowz promptly displays a BSoD which goes away if I press any key. After that the dreaded Gates' contraption seems to work fine and it is not frozen, but the networking services are dead. I mean I can't ping anything, browsers can't find servers and the like. After I reboot everything is back to normal until I start WinMX again. I have a cable connection and had never had any problems with anything else network/internet related before WinMX.
Please help

I have the answer...you probably wont like it, but it will work. First backup all of your vital information, then get your windows disks and programs disks ready. Then format your harddrive and do a clean install of the OS. Sure it might eat a little of your time, but afterwards you should have a trouble free PC. Your problem could be caused be ANYTHING and it would probably take you longer to figure it out then to just reload your operating system. Well good luck...

Sounds like you ran out of connection sockets. Its ridculeously low on Windows 9.x/ME systems as in its limit to 100. There is a registry hack that ups it but it could make your system unstable so i dont reccomend it.. Your way better off getting a NT based operating system like Win2k or XP.

LostGuy...read my post over on Slyck for you. I think 'rebuilding' your network drivers might solve the problem

If you're speeds are that low on ADSL try this tweak. Wont fix your WinMx problem but it should speed up you're connection.
BTW It's for WinME an below. Open the file in wordpad an hit up there site if you're using Xp.
Peace all, Later
