running a tracker

Hi!

i want to run PHPBTTracker--1.4
i know i need to set apache to handle .torrent files,
so i added a file named ".htaccess" to the torrents folder & added this inside the file:
AddType application/x-bittorrent .torrent
with no luck...


how much bandwidth PHPBTTracker--1.4 will take from my web server? [lets say 5000 users will use it]?


also - if i want to share files with the BT++ client i need to go to the history & click resume EVERY TIME i want to share a file ??? [because this is what happenning to me]

I very rarely tell people to solve their problems by changing client, but BT++ is very dated now. It didn't even update with the original client version 3.3.

Well ABC (pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net) is a neat little program and simular to BT++. It has just become fractionally out of date as it is built on Shad0w 5.8.7, but the latest shad0w is 5.8.8. That is only a minor upgrade, but be aware that ABC may become out of date in the future.
For someone who wants to set up a tracker I would put you as the sort to want to play around a bit. Therefore try Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/). It isn't simple like BT++, but it has lots of tweaks and options, all of which can be hidden so you get the style BT++ layout.
You may also be interested in burst. I didn't get along with it, but it is a simple light weight program.

Azureus is a java based client. I think that this is why it takes up so much CPU power, but most posters say how happy they are with its resource usage.
If you don't want Java then you can't use Azureus. I had java on my computer before Azureus as I needed it. I must admit that 17.5mb is a lot just for a BT client! I suppose if you consider the size of the files you will be downloading.....
Anyway, ABC is an excellent program and is what I use most of the time. I hope I didn't put you off with the out of date comment. All that Shad0w have updated (http://www.zeropaid.com/news/articles/auto/01282004b.php) is:
-> engine bugs fixed
-> bad tracker bug squashed
As far as i know I've never had a problem with either of these.
You could of course try Shad0ws client. Sadly I'm not in a position to comment on it.

Trackers do put a huge load on servers...considering the clients request new info every 2-6 seconds. So if you've got 5,000 uses all downloading all of them are asking for more seeds/peers on a ms basis.

As for BT++, just go to it's options and check 'keep uploading after download finishs' and restart. Any finished downloads should move to "History" and continue to upload as much as your connection will allow. Just don't unpause 4+ gig files in the history window..even on a XP 2500+ oc'ed to 3000+ specs it still takes about 90 seconds to hash it which locks up BT++'s shitty GUI for the time being. Guess it's cuz I'm still running off ATA 133 drives rather then SATA or SCSI. WD drives at that which don't fair to well in burst speed tests nor seeking..

What - If you are the original seed? I really don't know, I've never started a torrent. I would guess the same way as with BT++. (run the torrent and set the download place as the folder where the file is?)
There is of course the "create torrent" option under tools. If you are the original seed you can use the super-seed mode.

Indeed it does Shernoam. However, BT++ did not upgrade when the BT protocol was updated. I consider that very out of date. By sticking with BT++ you are getting slower download speeds than you could and it may be damaging to the network. When BT 3.3 was released everyone was asked to upgrade. BT++ decided that they would not upgrade anymore.
If you are happy with the speeds then carry on with it. Perhaps I was wrong to break with my tradition of not telling people to change client.

& ABC is compatible with BT protocol 3.3? [is that the newest?]

That is correct. Yes that is the newest. As far as I know, only BT++ didn't upgrade to the new protocol.
