I am new to this so please be patient. I am trying to play the movie that I recently downloaded from Kazaa and it seems to be playing in all of the players that I have tried (winamp3, divx, bs player, windowsmediaplayer 9) yet there is no picture or sound. I do get the divx symbol upon starting to play. I have downloaded and installed the k-lite codec pak. What could be wrong?

how big of a file is it?
how long does it say it lasts? (the duration of the movie, taken from one of your media players)
did it download abnormally fast?
given the answers to these questions, we should be able to determine if it is a fake file.

The Mpaa puts these on kazaa and other networks to make you feel bad. delete it and move on . some of their files will lock up your computer and can't hardly be kicked out of your computer.I download in one folder and move file into another as soon as downloaded[or copy to another folder if you like] if you get a bad file mixed in with the good ones you may not be able to get to the good [computer will lock up when you open download folder], only way out, delete whole folder, but you will lose good files along with the one thats giving you trouble.[just create new folder and rename as the one deleted] get the klite codec pack and install you will get all codec you need plus the bs player and g-spot you can move movie into g-spot and it will test movie to see what it needs[I'm betting it will say damaged or corrupt] if not it will tell you what you need to play movie. When I downloaded k-lite codec pack along time ago it had no adware or spyware.you need adaware or spybot to kick that stuff out anyhow. get peerguardian and run it when you download to keep out bad threads and nosy ,take you to court people. also sence I moved to bittorrent I no longer get those files you were asking about. one other thing zonealarm downloaded will show you all kinds of things trying to get on line to RAT you out after playing some of these [unguarded give me all you got downloads] configure your windows media player to stay of the net.my built in cd-rw program would try to go on line after a copy was made. blocked it all with zonealarm PS all the programs I talked about are FREE

The palyers say that the length of the files (it varies actually) is 1:02:00 and when i hit the play button the time starts ticking off and the slide starts to move from the left. i can move the slide manually to any spot and the time/length meter changes to match. that is why i think that the movie /file is playing. i do have the klite codec pak and bs player. i'll try the gspot thing.

Thank You for your help - Gspot says these are all junk and have very little data actually available except garbage

I assume here that the file is probably empty of valid movie data, for interpretation by a particular codec. A file can still be 700+ megabytes in size, but only actually contain a long stream of zeros. Most codecs will still accept it, but you'll be presented with a blank screen and no sound, usually for the duration of the length of the film.
As mentioned concisely earlier, this movie reeks of being a fake, and the mentioned Klite codec and player pack, is highly recommended.
Maybe check: http://doa2.host.sk/codecs/ for info+
Also remember too, that applications such as eMule, are well organised for only sharing good quality stuff, via sites like sharereactor etc. Maybe, get to grips with eMule . . the move from Kazaa may be a pain, but will probably be worth it, especially for 100% pucka movies.

Look at it this way...
If you can't view it with any codec packs (or FFDSHOW) installed and Virtual Dub tells you to bugger off with your crap file...it's probably a fake. Next time ya'll ask questions about video playback - make sure you include codec info as well as your OS and player. As at first I thought you could have been missing Xvid/WMV9 and Ogg or Ac3 in your codec library which in turn would have given the files integrity reasonable doubt...
