Hey everyone just wondering for a class project how many operating systems actually exist, are you up to the challege, if your bored or have some spare time could you please help?

thiers windows 3.1, windows 95.. windows 98, windows 98se.. Windows 2000, windows xp, home, professional. I think thats about it..=)

there are hundreds of distributions of linux.

Don't forget Windows 2.x, GEOS, FreeDOS, Windows 3.0, PC-DOS, x-DOS where x is any company that made a DOS such as Tandy-DOS.

u can play that game 4ever until u mention all variants of all OSes, which is impossible. change some code in any linux distro, compile that shit, add your fav apps, optimize everything 2 ur needs, put it into the interweb and viola another variant of an OS.

this guy had a website detailing his ventures with operating systems... on his PC, using either VMWare or VPC, he had well over 200 OSes. there were about a dozen or so OSes (that were possible to emulate on an x86 machine) that he didnt have installed. but of course, that doesnt include any of the MacOSes, etc.

Hey, what about Commodore 64 BASIC? That was awesome! (jk, of course)

Seriously, the main operating systems are Windows, Mac OS, and Unix / Linux (w00t!). There are hundreds (if not thousands) of different verisons of all of these, so, unless you feel like counting, I can't really give you an exact number.

However, if you really feel like going nuts, include all OSes for all platforms, such as Palm OS and Windows Moble.
