We finally replaced the computer with ME for one with XP. So far so good. My question is about all the Start Up Programs. What are all these and which ones can I safely uncheck?
hpsysdv, hkcmd, hpqcmon, hphupd05, hphmon05, KBD, sgtray, real sched, AUTOKIT, REC GUARD, VTTimer, ALCXMNTR, ps2, shwicon, acApp, CFD, wxndmgr, dw, hpgs2wnd, rundll32, 1, backupnotify. Thanks.

http://www.blackviper.com/ This is a great site to tell you what you need running. What I do is make a list of the programs I can shut down, and remove them one at a time. That way if a problem develops you know what you need to re-enable to fix things up. I hope this helps, and good luck.

Yup excellent post hunter I was about to suggest the same. Black Viper is an excellent site and will guide you through getting rid of MS crapware. Just make sure you can spend a couple of hours before starting and read all of the documentation carefully.

BlackViper references startup services, not startup programs. The things he is mentioning sound like .exe's or .dll checks on startup.

Go through the programs you have installed. If there is an option to "start this program with windows" or "start automatically" (generally) uncheck it. Always do this first.

Check your STARTUP folder in the XP start menu. If there is something there that you don't want or that you can safely delete, do so.
