.avi wony play with MS.MP9

Hi all,
This is my first post so be gentle with me
I down loaded ".avi" but it won't play in media player 9.
Any ideas as to why and how I can correct it.
I want to convert it to DVD eventually.

First, don't list filenames of stuff you've downloaded.

Second, that sould like you are missing a codec. Probably some sort of DivX codec.
