What software do I need to play AVI videos? Everytime I try to play a movie it keeps giving me in error that the Windows player doesn't support the file.

You need codecs to tell your media player how to decode your video files. Go here:www.k-litecodecpack.com and download and install the codec pack. Next time you try and play a file in WMP, it should work fine.

Should do it. In the event that it doesn't, try downloading another popular media player, such as Media Player Classic (MPC), BSPlayer, or ZoomPlayer, among many.

If you don't want to bother installing codecs, VLC Media Player (http://videolan.org/vlc/) can play anything and everything.
