How can I transfer a video (mpeg format) from my harddrive to a standard VHS video tape? Is this even possible? Thanks.

All you need is a TV out on your video card, an audio out on your sound card and a couple of cables.

There were a few ideas here but most of them resulted in some loss of quality. Plus I never tried any so not sure how workable they are. Hopefully someone who has done will come along.

Run these to the "in" on your VCR. If you wanna see it on TV as well, run from the VCR to your TV. Then all you need is a blank tape and a finger to push record!

VCR? Tape?
I've heard of that technology. Didn't they use that back in the 20th Century before VCDs and DVDs?

i did it once
video card with tv out=99 bucks (card came with the s-video to rca style video connector)
rca to stereo 1/8" y-connector=10 bucks
y adapter to red and white connectors from speaker out on computer to line in on vcr (in my case reciever connected to vcr), yellow video plug from video card to video in on vcr
play the movie in full screen and don't touch anything--otherwise you'll end up with mouse arrows or system sounds in the finished product (move the mouse arrow off screen before hitting record)
a reciever is a nice thing to connect to, because you will know if you have sound or not (run a quick test run if you aren't sure everything is set up right to save grief later)

i do this all the time, except i normally have it running strait to my TV instead of thru my VCR, because i dont really need to tape anything.
i just used my nvidia GF 4 mx 440 w/ svideo out (along with a svideo to RCA cable converter that came with the card) and a headphone jack splitter (1/8" as notbob mentioned). for the sake of not having to spend a buttload of cash on 35 foot wires, i made my own RCA cables out of some well insulated intercom wire my dad got from my school where he taught for 30+ years. i ran that accross the room above the suspended ceiling and dropped it down right behind my TV. i then bought a RCA switch so i could have both my PC and PS2 hooked up, changing with the press of a button. i then wired that into my TV and set up my TV as a clone of my PC's monitor. now whenever i want to watch a movie in the comfort of my recliner, its just a couple buttons away.
