I have Windows XP Prof!
Hi to all. Without boring you with all the details I will just say that I quit a computer group that I belonged to and whether for spite or fun they are getting into my computer!
I cannot use a firewall (I tried it) but it stopped me D/L lots of stuff!
Well this is to ask if anyone knows how I can change my IP address or get the server to do it? (Shaw) I have asked Shaw three times and they refuse
Thank you and have a nice day.

Reformat your computer.

DO NOT ACCESS THE INTERNET UNTILL YOU DO THE FOLLOWING, REMOVE THE PLUG FROM YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE YOU FORMAT SO YOU DONT FORGET.

Install anti-virus software

Set up your windows network firewall.

Access the internet...

Download zone alarm

Update windows "fixes"

update your anti virus software

Any other computers on your network may also be compromised, you should do the following before connecting them back up to your computer.

As for changing your IP, most broadband companies use static IPs, so unless they let you change yours which can only do it on their side I would suggest the following...

Contact your isp, explain the security breaches that are happeneing to your computer, if you can make a report of the following ips that are trying to gain access to your computer/network with zone alarm you should do so.

Any decent ISP should change the IP address for you, if they still refuse I would recommend saying that you are thinking of switching to one of their competitors if they cant do this simple task for you.

Well my friend I wish you luck, keep fighting them.

Also on my site you can find service tweaks, like how to disable remote registry so people cannot gain access over a network and make changes to your registry or any settings on your computer unless they are sitting at it.

well u should unplug your cable intenet connection for 24 hours and pick up a new ip address. its possible
u will be with out net access for 24 hours though

u dont need to format
just get a firewall and watch what ports are open and who connects.
dont friggin format that would be dum to do.

just obtain new ip address, that means being off net for 24 hours
good luck
if i am wrong , atleast i tried to help u out

If its a static address it wont matter how long he unplugs it, what your talking about is an address being assigned by a server that has a collection of addresses (like aol) it would change after a disconnect reconnect.

I think he might be infected with a trojan or something, could be alot of other things too...

I've been able to force an IP address change by changing my NIC's MAC address. I use Shaw in Vancouver, so it's likely the same thing will work for you. I can't give specific details on how to do this because the procedure differs considerably depending on what OS and NIC you have, but you might try googling it.

It would be pointless to change the ip address and then only to find out that a virus or something may just "phone home" with the new IP address of the computer you are using.

Might want to format first, change ip second

Omyn you gave very good advice...

I don't mean to sound horrible, bit Omyn suggesting a reformat as a first option is the worst advice I saw out of the whole lot.

Step 1, install a firewall.

Step 2, update to the latest virus definitions and run a full scan (norton will pick up either virii or or trojans).

Step 3, go to www.pcflank.com and run some of their tests to see if you are vulnerable on the net, if so look at their suggestions. Their site will also tell you if any trojans are using open ports on your system.

Step 4, If you are still getting hacked into Request a change of IP from your ISP as suggested above and let them know what is happening.

nope..you didn't sound horrible at all...the quote i had in my first post was inappropriate...i meant to quote this one:

but overall i did like the advise he gave..it's what I would personally do myself if i felt compromised in any way...but please remember that it's only my opinion...not hard fact or strict gospel that requires blind obedience.

your advise is also good..which leads me to believe i may have spoke too soon in giving compliments..but one thing is quite obvious to me and it is this:

the zeropaid forums are full of friendly helpful people.

If the above suggestions were too technical I'm kinda wondering what computer group you belonged to. How are they getting into your computer? And how do you know that they are? As said before, changing your IP is pointless. Start with scanning your machine for trojans or backdoors, a good virus scanner will detect those. Get a router (those provide you with a good firewall), or use a software-based firewall (Win XP has one, and you can turn it on in Network Connections). Only as a last resort I'd consider reformatting.

my suggestion is to use peerguardian or block out their ip =) I have DSL, and the last numbers change upon connection and reconnection.

this
omg
ok
turn off your modem and leave it off for 3 days so your IP can be released from the Server.

First off, are u running broadband? As far as I know, if your running broadband, leaving your modem connection off for too long will create temporary problems in getting your connection back you will have to call the isp to get them to ping your modem. If you have a router installed you might be able to release and renew your dchp and get a new IP addy. Make sure you have your firewall, antivirus and peergaurdian turned off while your doing this because it will interfere with it (just make sure to turn everything back on when your done!).
It will probably take a few tries of releasing and renewing (because the router searches for the next available IP and returns to the original if there isn't one) but it should work after a few tries.

edit- I also agree with omyn but if you don't format your comp at least get a good up dated antivirus and run it!!!

A little trojan can be a nasty thing!

No Internet for 3 days?

Damn, that would be hard to do.

I can vouch for this method, as I am on a Shaw high-speed connection myself. I changed our family computer's IP just back a few months ago when we went on vacation. I have also spoken with Shaw's tech's that confirmed 48 hours minimum should do the trick.

Thanks again for all your help.
First I would die without my computer for 48 hours.
I am not being ungreatfull but would not my lovely movies stop being D/L if I put firewall in?
I have formatted, still get problems. I am going back to Shaw today and ask them to change it.
Will let you all know what they say.

Good luck with Shaw. But tell us, how are the computer group kids getting in your computer? An XP system with all security patches, print and file-sharing off, and no servers running doesn't offer much one could attack.

gotcha3
January 20th, 2004, 09:26 AM
I have low security and no firewalls because my hobbie is D/L movies and I found with firewalls on it slowed or stopped my D/Ls
Plus I am 76 and don't suppose I have that much time left to watch movies!

Once someone knows your IP or mac address it's not hard to hack someone without a firewall, but even a good hacker would still not have any trouble getting through a firewall and/or router. I have heard Linux lovers say, there is always a way into a windows box, firewall or not. Where there's a will...there's always a way.

I wonder if gotcha3 uses XP's built in firewall at least?? I am quite sure it won't affect your D/L speeds and it's certainly better than not using any.
