I buy CDs. I was visiting NYC, and I went to the Virgin Megastore (and for those who don't know what that is, it's the biggest CD store in America) and I spent $107.00 on CD's.. lol.. even though I do have a burner, it was just I havn't bought a cd in 1 yr. so I thought I'd better help out the music industry.. lol

I don't buy music from stores here, since they usually don't have what I'm looking for. I also hear that the post people in Germany do a horrible job, so I don't trust them. It's hard for me to find reliable and safe places to order from, so I just get my goods for free and burn them to CD-R.

i've gotten a bunch of CD-Rs that'sabout it. Cds are too expensive and it's rare thata solid CD hits shelves that u can listen to all the way through. Most of the pop crap that is released hasa very limited shelf life and one or two hits. I'd rather pick and choose what i get then burn a mix to Cd.

There are a few bands that I have followed for years that I support. I will sometimes find stuff for sale in the BMG or Play cataloge (last month I bought the Radiohead collection for under 20 bucks-havn't paid for it yet). When I go to San Diego I always go up the beach to Lou's they have a unbelievable collection. When I go to Austin I go to Waterloo, ditto with a ton of Texas bands. Sometimes I go to record conventions that are set up in hotel rooms. I can usually find something that makes me smile. However burners rule.

I buy CDs, but only ones that I think are high quality. Oh btw the Virgin Recordstore is a pretty nice place to go :;). Some CDs that I think deserve my money recently are:
The Hives - Veni, Vidi, Viscious
Dave Matthews Band - Busted Stuff
Bruce Springsteen - The Rising
The Vines - Highly Evolved
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way

I definitely still buy CDs. I've always been a music collector instead of movies. The only thing I'd say is that I don't buy as many right now cause my budget is the tightest it has ever been. But I hit the used CD shops and the new artists sales (under $8 at Target, Best Buy, Circuit City) if I see something promising in their Sunday ads.
If I had the cash, I'd still be buying about 20 per month, but mostly used still. :sw

When I was at the Virgin Megastore I bought all the Eminem CDs they had there, and his new CD, the Eminem Show now that was worth the $15.00! I love every song except maybe like 2 or 3.... out of 20.... so 2 or 3 out of 20 isn't bad.. but it's an awsome cd.. you should all buy it. he tells it like it is. lol..:cross

I don't think a music cd worth $15-$20 (on the other hand DVDs are) so I stopped bying cds until the big record companies who are making millions charging for these cds will realize that an audio cd should not cost more than $10. Until then I'll download the music

:devil I don't buy many CD's anymore though I still buy albums of old stuff and imports..mostly the stuff to finish my collection of artists. I just bought a couple of Rolling Stones import albums and bought 2 Who imports that completes my Who collection. Even though I never listen to the albums I have always been a collecter of vinyl (close to 20,000 albums) and that is what I prefer to spend my money on these days.

between 1992 and 1999, i bought 900 cd's
1999-now i bought about 20(5 this year)--i cut way down after metallica (lars) started bitching about napster, 1999 was also the year record companies were sued by the government for price fixing--which they settled out of court and everyone forgot about (with all the napster news taking up airtime)
i have about 500 ripped at high lame vbr and share them on dc (76 gb total)

I can honestly say that in my entire life I bought 2 cd's!
you would say thats not really much, but in the old days I would borrow cd's from the library and copy those on tapes, later on my dad was one of the first who bought a cd-writer, he needed one for his job, and I made a fortune selling copied cd's. Nowadays I just download mp3's and play them on my MP3 player. :;)

I was talking about recently released CDs (in the last 2 or 3 months, not counting the Hives)
The Vines don't sound like RHCP, because no one does ; ) But they are worth checking out. OK so Springsteen isn't exactly a hard rock kinda guy, but the music is still good. It all depends on your preference, which I have none, because I listen to everything (everything that sounds good, that is).

Yeah I still buy some CDs, but never retail anymore. I stopped buying retail CDs altogether when the average price went above $13.
I do get some music online, but I also visit sites like half.com and local hawk/pawn shops to get music at really good prices ($5 and under).

I usually dl the songs first and see if I like them. If I like a lot of the songs on a CD, then I'll buy it. If it's just one song from an artist I like, I usually use BuyMusic.com - otherwise, forget it.

The last time I bought a CD was in sept. and that was Cher's greatest hits, but that was a birthday gift for my mother, so I guess the last time I actually bought a CD was at the end of the summer when I bought Beyoncé for 10$ and NOW! 8 for 9$. The next time I'm going to buy a CD is when Nelly Furtado's new CD "Folklore" comes out, normally I pirate everything (unless the CD is insanely cheap and I figure its a steal) but I fully support Nelly and can't wait to hear her new stuff, after that I guess the next CD I'm going to purchase is Avril or Shania's new CD - whichever comes first, like with Nelly's CD, because I truly support and wish the best of luck to these 3 artists, but aside from that every other CD that I might want will probably be gotten through other means.

I don't really buy cds anymore b/c there's not much music I'd actually want to buy. I buy DVDs now and computer related stuff. However, I did purchase a cd a few weeks ago and was disappointed in all the tracks except for 2. *I should've listened to them before it was bought* the cd also gave me trouble when copying :o I think it was b/c it was "enhanced" and maybe cdrs don't really support that. Just ripped em and burned em.

I used to buy at least several CDs a month, a pattern I had continued from when my favorite media was cassette tapes and before that LPs. I couldn't respond to the poll because I purchase CDs somewhere in between "once a month" and "once a year."
I still believe in supporting artists whom I really admire. I bought Superdrag's last CD before going to see them last year; same with Ministry. I have also purchased the rest of Kyuss' back catalogue a bit at a time over the past year, as well as all of Q.O.T.S.A. But this was all after I had already DL'd most of it all and found it to be quite excellent.
I have only made one other CD purchase this year; it was the new Medicine CD. And I was immediately reminded why I don't buy music without previewing on P2P first. (I lucked out with the Superdrag and Ministry CD's) I am a huge fan of Medicine's older stuff which was of the "pop noise" genre; infectious pop grooves, Brad Laner's and Beth Thompson's awesome vocal harmonies, and guitar feedback turned into a shimmering sonic walls of incredible beauty...So when I saw a new Medicine CD after they had been defunct for about 8 years, I grabbed it. But it turned out to be a pile of drum machine-synth crap that sounds like it was emgneered by a tone deaf monkey using Acid Music 1.0.
Oh yeah, I also bought MBM's R.U.O.K. with Jack Dangers's Variaciones Espectrales for a friend's Christmas gift from Amazon and had it shipped to him. (I had sampled some of both on P2P beforehand; I will never again buy another CD in a store that I haven't listened to most of first via P2P)
So while I will continue to purchase CD's, they are VERY occasional and highly selective purchases. As far as the "only if it is rare" choice, I very rarley find what I happen to be "into" at the moment at any of the music stores I go to. Before, P2P, I still preferred eclectic college-style music stores over the chains, but now, not even Newbury Comics has everything I listen to. But it's all on someone's hard drive...and going onto mine, lol

Everybody here who makes the pathetic argument that CDs are too expensive need to start finding artists that aren't connected to massive profit-generating labels.
Everybody here who makes the pathetic argument that CDs they buy only contain a few decent tracks need to start finding artists that write DECENT music and can happily fill a CD with decent tunes.
Sure, download as much shite off the net as you can, but MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTION you tight-arsed sponging motherf*ckers.

There's no doubt that I still buy CDs (and even rarer material on cassette/vinyl). Contrary to the file-swapping "lifestyle" that's entered mainstream awareness during the past few years, all of the downloading and swapping on earth could never take away the fun that entails purchasing music. Crazy? No. Here's why:
To me there's nothing like catching a pre-release "midnight sale" at the former Coconuts Music on Sheridan Rd. near the Loyola "el" stop by standing on line in whatever weather to get an album before "everyone else."
Nothing replaces the pre-release buzz of being able to hear the tracks premiered on the local radio station, thus increasing the suspense of having to wait for THE album of the season/month/year/decade to hit stores.
The ability to pick up potential collector's items/hard to find/potentially never-to-be re-released material (i.e. Beatles - White Album (vinyl), Prince - Black Album (vinyl)) cannot be underestimated.
The feeling that one gets when they know that they can back up a hard copy at any given time and extend the longevity of the material. At this moment, I've encoded nearly 10,000 tracks of my family's collection (CDs/cassettes/vinyl, etc.) to a network server on our four-PC LAN, thus making any and all tracks instantly accessible to my wife, myself or one of the kids if they happened to be logged on. Even though the mp3s have been "backed up," the security of knowing that I can simply go upstairs and produce the CD/cassette/vinyl that would allow instant reproduction of a virus-damaged/accidentally erased mp3 is priceless.
If you've been collecting music for a while, you KNOW that there's nothing like the j-card (cassette), sleeve (vinyl) or booklet (CD) that comes with a pre-recorded album. I know that sites exist which would allow this material to be downloaded and printed, but, to me, it's still not the same.
The act of shopping for music can be fun in itself. If you've ever gone to a record (I mean vinyl) or contemporary music store (all CDs), the all-too-familiar scavenger hunt of flipping through a few hundred albums to find the one(s) that you're seeking is an exercise in exploration. Isn't it funny how you end up finding other album in addtion to the one(s) you came for? I'm talking about long-forgotten albums that you always meant to buy but, for some reason or other, never got around to doing so!
Having to order that out-of-print album over the phone/via internet, or having to go to far flung locales to pick it up is an adventure in itself. I reside on the SW side of Chicago. I like taking an occasional weekend to go to Chicago Digital (Oak Park), Grammaphone Records (Lincoln Park/Near North Side), or some of the stores in the 'hood: Coop's (South Side) or George's Music Room (West Side, during the day of course!)), and Rock Records (Washington Street in the Loop) or Disc Go 'Round (Davis Street, Evanston).
Some stores will, upon your request, play the album for you over the stores stereo system (i.e. Tower Records in the Loop, Grammaphone) or kiosks with the album will be available with headphones for you to preview the entire album prior to purchase, assuming you decide to purchase it (i.e. the former Blockbuster Music in downtown Evanston). I've used many a lunch break to preview an album or two on pay day, decide that I liked them and take them home.
Downloading mp3s does not compare to the social atmosphere of perusing a decently decorated store (posters, furniture, booths, etc.). When I lived on the North Side of the city (Rogers Park), I used to like to hop the Red/Purple lines to downtown Evanston, peruse Borders for a book and then go next door to Blockbuster Music and sample/purchase a cassette/CD or two. Sitting in front of the PC in my house obviously does not provide the same ambience.
I know that this post is a bit long winded, but collecting music is a hobby/passion of mine. I'm in no way trying to knock those who prefer to forgo purchasing hard copy formats and simply download mp3s. To me nothing (yet) compares to going to a store, flipping through the music and taking it home.

Though I don't agree with your "waste money" statement, I found my self in the same boat when our first child came along five years ago. I used to buy an average of an album a week (two per pay day). As I aged (from mid-twenties to 30), my tastes changed to more mellow music (i.e. r & b, jazz, classical) from more hardcore material (thrash, heavy metal, hardcore hip-hop) and the amount of cash expended and titles purchased went down. Besides, I said it is a hobby/passion and I meant that within reasonable bounds. Some of the people I used to work with spent potentially a hundred or more per month. To me, that's definitely over the top. Listening pleasure aside, I agree with you in the sense that even I am not trying to spend myself into the poorhouse in the name of hobbyism. Even still, the hundreds of albums I have have been collected literally over half a lifetime (since the age of 15). I didn't pick them in a month or two.

I look at it a completely different way Digispeed03. I like downloaded music because I don't have to wait to own a song that I like and I don't have to walk to the shops. I don't need to store a stack of CDs stuffed with pointless pieces of paper, with stuff like Moby's political opinions. I don't have to walk to the shop in the rain, justle the crowds or deal with checkout staff. I don't have to find the best price. I don't have to put up with headphones that have been on a load of ears before I get to them. I hate the shopping experience.

Dammit...Am I alone on my stance or what? Not only do the majority of people who've posted replies to this thread prefer downloading mp3s over CD purchases, I find that I have "digital dissenters" in my own family! My sister, brother-in-law, neice and my wife's neice and nephew all stated that they prefer downloading mp3s- and they don't even visit ZeroPaid! Malicious, as difficult as it is to accept, in my own familial/peer group your point has a lot of validity. My 21-year-old college senior neice and wife's 18-year-old college freshman nephew stated that they too do not like the hassle of visiting stores/seeking out CDs. My 37-year-old brother-in-law SWEARS by mp3s via KaZaA (go figure...). My sister and her boyfriend, at last count, had at least 2,500 mp3s via Grokster. Does anyone out there still enjoy buying CDs/music?

Wow, I posted in this thread when it was first started. I look back and laugh at the posts.
Well here's an update on my status:
I haven't really bought CDs in a while. If I do like an artist a lot I will go out and purchase the CD. Well actually I will get it cheap off of eBay. I don't think that's helping out, but oh well. I get the CDs dirt cheap.

I rarely buy cds, though not because i dont want to , but because i cant, i live in a pretty remote area and its over a 50 mile drive to the nearest record store, also it doesnt help that im 15 and have no cash :P .. most of the bands i listen to are european and relatively unheard of here in the states, their labels arent big enough to ship many cds over seas to retail stores and as a result you almost have to download in order to hear them :(

The only RIAA CD ill buy is Rammstein. On thier last 2 CD's, All the songs were great, and definitely worth the 20$
But either then that, ill just keep buying CD-Rs, because the music stores offer no selection (Unless you like pop and recycled pop-hop music). And if they do have a Trance artists CD that I would like, its gonna cost 35$. Definitely not worth it.
Ill just keep downloading until CD purchases become affordable. Movies, I will buy, they are affordable(Picked up Goldeneye special edition DVD for 17$, and its more then worth it!)

i had an addiction of buying cd's.. I wonder now as i look back on my wasted cd buying life.. how could i get so low without some intervention.. Force to buy a group based on one song only hitting the radio.. No time displayed on the cover, buying something i thought would give me 80 minutes of enjoyment.. Come to find it only gave me 40 minutes of melancholy. Rushed to a record store to discover that i can only replace it with the same artist and album, and cant get a refund =( My little heart broke into even more pieces.. Forced to sale it at pawn shops or used cd stores for 1/10 of the cost. All i can say now.. Not ask what P2P can do for you, but what you can do for P2P.

I haven't bought a RIAA Music CD since MJ's Invincible... and before that was Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope. Both were the week they came out at Target here in Layton, Utah....BUT! I still buy CD-Rs and RWs!

I buy about 2-3 CD's a year and about 300-400 CD-R's a year.
(The 2-3 CD's are usually gifts for other people though!)

Well CDS and DVDS are not worth $20 dollars a pop. I would pay under $10 dollars for them for older ones $5 dollars. Classics should be 3 dollars

I last bought a CD about 3 years ago... no wait I take that back. I actually liked the Nelly album so much (Da Derrty Versions - The Reinventions) that I went out and bought it. I paid 10 bucks for it though :D

Of course I still buy CDs! Where do y'all think those MP3's that you're trading come from? Someone has to buy it. With file trading, people like me basically subsidize the leachers who don't contribute anything new at all. If you're really cash strapped, why don't you buy some stuff on Ebay and rip it and share it with the rest of us? I know that doesn't exactly support the artist, but it would benefit the file sharing community. I'm tired of all the people who are taking and not giving - and that's what people who refuse to buy CDs are doing.

Because the more different rips out there, the more confusion over which to download, the less sources available.
I do see what you mean, but unlike the US, anti-competition law suits have failed here. Screw the industry if they think that I will wait an extra 2 months or more for the latest album at a premium price. Just like I don't mind Americans who are scared of law suits, I like to think Americans arn't upset that I never contribute the original file. I admit that the original American seeder would not see it this way, but by the time I have access to the file, I can contribute more by downloading and sharing a popular source.

Once a month (or so)
Sometimes the download just doesn't satisfy your need for the actual physical CD. If I've taken to an artist, yes.
If filesharing didn't exist, I would never buy any CDs. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

... there are a few bands I follow and support by buying their music... (radiohead for one).. but I also like to find their rarities and such online... years ago I had nearly my entire music collection stolen. We're talking thousands and thousands of dollars in discs and vinyl. I download, copy, and burn any and all of those recordings when I come across them with absolutely no guilt. I paid for them once, and some random scum bag at a house party we threw walked out of my house with it while I was passed out drunk in the early hours of the morning.
.. oh, yeah.. and I flat out steal an *S* load of music too from the net... hey, I'm honest about it at least. I don't like to throw around excuses about music costing too much, etc, blah blah blah. In my opinion the proper response to that is to not buy it and NOT download it. It really is silly when people act like they're revolutionaries fighting for musical freedom by filling their hard drives with illegal tracks. I download music I haven't paid for and I'm a thief for doing so. No illusions of grandure here.

I voted, but I don't know if I posted about it, yet alone what I voted for. If I buy a cd, it is because I have listened to the songs non stop, that was before the RIAA started sueing people, and making stupid people[like a sertain person I know :D,] believe that they are going to get sued. Ur...
Plus, rather then evanescence, I listen to trance, and by the time any of even the most mainstream of mainstream songs I like comes out in north america, I'm long over it, and onto the next track. It's silly to buy singles anyway. How muchwould the artist get from a single release anyway? Arn't they less? lol, see I don't even know.

Why I should to buy CD's?
1.I haven't money for it...
2.And other reason is such, that in internet I can find everything I want.
Really in the internet I find 99% of all music's... and here in Lithuania, if I wanted to buy some, I wouldn't find it, because here is only 10% of all music's :(

I haven't bought a CD in a LONG time. As soon as I discovered P2P I just started downloading songs and burning them to blanks. The last CD I bought was a lame ass WWE CD from a few years back. I will continue to download until I just can't download anymore. So unless I get sued and thrown into jail by the RIAA, my arms get cut off, my computer breaks down or all P2P networks close down I'll still be downloading music.

You are not alone, I love buying CD's especially used on Amazon's Marketplace where you can get some great deals. As For Vinyl, there is nothing like it when played with the right equipment. Mp3's even Lame 320 kb pale by comparison. I still Download tons of music, but when I find an album I really like, I buy it for the sound quality.

Same here...artists deserved to be paid if it's something I really like and listen to a lot...especially if they're not on a major label

I'm sure I commented someplace in here..I'm just too lazy to look. I just bought the new Fear Factory album "Archetype" yesterday. It is kick ass. They cover Nirvana's "School" off of the Bleach album. Sounds awesome.
Dino was replaced by Christian and Strapping Young Lad's Byron Stroud is on bass duties. The best part is it is only $8.00 at BestBuy and comes with a DVD which includes a ˝ hour "Making of..." and the video for "Cyberwaste." Definitely worth getting. :shy

I would have paid $8 for the DVD, so I guess it all depends on your point of view. A download does not give you that, nor the cool jacket, lyrics, or pictures. And the wrapping? Come on.

I buy used CD's from time to time (in small store which is selling rare CDs).
New ones are overpriced. Besides, major record stores like Tower Records will
never sell cds by Coil or Cop Shoot Cop & some other bands for obvious reasons.

I did buy CD'S at one time, every so often. But No forget It. Since the RIAA bought the congreess of the United States. I sure as well won't any more. These are my opinions and I stand by them. Big Business corrupt as they are pushed this through the Senate like a paper towel. For the People, By the People (By The RIAA) U mean. I am not gonna stop downloading until I have NO Choice. I know that I can't afford the fines. If we appeal this do we have a chance to win. They are prob bought and paid for as well. Our freedoms are going down the toilet. THIS IS SAD!

If I like the album enough, I will eventually buy the CD.
Unless it's Elvis Costello. I'll buy his stuff. "North" was bleh, but that's okay, his voice is fabulous enough for me.
For the price of a CD, I can go bowling for 4 hours. I'd rather go bowling.

Cds are too expensive, they charge around 15 pounds here. I've gone right off the Chilli Peppers though, the words don't seem to make much sense to me apart from the rhyme.
I dunno I might buy a soundtrack of seagulls squawking and torture myself. Not.

Do I ever buy CD's? Hell no! Sure, I'd like to feel bad that I'm "cheating" overpaid artists out of their hypothetical earnings...about as much as I'd like to feel bad about cheating Bill Gates out of the money he so desperately needs when (...let's just say I obtain a copy of their OS that isn't properly licensed...yes, that'll do...) If I really think a band is worth supporting, I'll try to see them live. But the concept of paying for music, and especially that of paying $15 for a CD, severely limits my musical choices. Many artists can't be found anywhere but free P2P or some hole in the wall record store that would charge $17.99 for a 21-minute album, and anyone would be reluctant to try a new artist that they may or may not like if they were charged to listen to even one song. Everyone loves getting music for free, but truly, the greatest thing about P2P file sharing is that it can free us all from the musical boundaries of Clear Channel radio and the Top 40 rack at Tower Records...if we want to be free.
