well it looks like HP is taking a very firm stand with the likes of the RIAA types.
they will (and are) be building their systems so as not to allow copying copyrighted material..... read here:

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114213,tk,dn010904X,00.asp

the piracy issue aside, what about our right to burn backup copies? I wouldn't buy an HP pos anyway, BUT, I'll make sure I pass on the word.

In related news, HP stock plummets to record 5 year low! j/k

This does sound like it would hurt sales though. I know I wouldnt have one. :ass

Some of the new Cds wont even play on my pc. Case in point the better half just bought a new cd, so i said i would do it in MP3 format for her so she wouldnt have to carry so many CDs. Well guess what it wont play on the PC, now that just pisses me off, as the computer is my stereo. Also as it wont play, it cant be made into MP3s.

HP, the "Anti-Consumer" computer.

Or how about, HP, the "Nobody will buy me" computer.

My next one will be a home brew job, the same as this one. Hopefully this spring will get things done. Im still keeping the old one, as I have all kinds of spare parts to keep it running. Its not much, but its built like a tank, and has been super reliable.

set up a paypal hunter, so we can buy you a boombox.. If i cant get a cd to play in my CD-ROM drive.. Ill just download it.. case closed.. Other people have more alternative methods that get the whole disk, and will be cd quality without me losing sleep. HP stands for Happily Paid... or HomoPusses =)

i got a boombox, but thats not the point. A lot of people use only the pc as their stereo, just like me. i did download the whole album, and am sharing it now out of spite. I consider it my right to make a back up copy, and when they try to prevent it I will deal with it exactly the same as you.

I totally agree with Hunter on this one.....I've got a boombox not 2m from my comp, but I definitely use the computer as a stereo all the time.

If a cd doesnt play in my comp, I'll dl it, burn it, and tell my friends not to buy it. There is no excuse for not being able to play my own purchased cd on my own equipment.

Seeing how I have had SO MUCH FUN with my hp, I know that in the future I won't get one. This information only solidifies my decision.

I'll keep it mind the next time I go to buy a printer, a digital camera, or anything else that HP makes.

Hunter--your a man after my own heart. BIY with none of this anti-copying crap in it. It's the only way to go.

The only thing about this that bothers me is HP is now merged with Compaq. I have had good experiences with Compaq and now it looks like I'll be changing. Oh well I guess it was bound to happen. Don't be surprised if most major MFGs start heading in that direction.

Can't you just hold shift to prevent the copy protection from loading?

Can't you just hold shift to prevent the copy protection from loading? That does not work for this problem, it prevents the player from reconizing the media.

Hunter, I had the same problem on my computer and a few of my bud's machines
The cd's kept directing themselves to the bands website and would not play, I was pissed and still am. After that I had to make myself a few backup copies *coughs*

I've always been able to copy protected audio CDs using EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de).

AnyDVD is also supposed to circumvent this kind of copy protection but I haven't tested it.

:swI was responding to the shift key action d-koolest was referring to. Normally most copy protected media wont play on pc's even by stopping the auto run feature of the drive. I have used nero and sonic to copy many types of media and have never had a problem. Thanks for the for EAD link as I have never used this progam.

This one is truly odd, as it plays, sortof, and then sounds like one of the famous RIAA downloads. IE has a lot of stutters in it. It also wont play on the kenwood in the truck, but plays fine in the house stereo. Every other disk plays fine with no glitches at all.
