Personally, I absolutely hate advertising, because the world is littered with it. I don't tolerate it in the slightest on my computer, and I'm curious if anyone else is as hardcore as I am :) I use two different ad- and spy-ware scanners, I have a filter for my browser that eliminates pop-ups, banners, and crappy javascript tricks, I have patches or ad-ons for msn, aim, and icq, I use a third-party client for yahoo chat, and I have an elaborate hosts file that I actively maintain based on my own preferences. My motto is, my eyes, my brain, my life, and I have better things to do with them all, then be told what to consume next! Anyone else hate adware as much as I do???

I use ad-aware and spybot, and use the Google Toolbar with advanced features disabled to block popups, though I have been using the Internet so long that banner ads in browsers dont annoy me, so I let those pass. In magazines - I kinda like ads, dont know why. But ads that flash in bright colors - YOUVE WON THE DAILY PRIZE! annoy me, but I figure - Im using the sites bandwidth, so I guess I need to pay for it someway. But ads in programs annoy me, so I either hack em/patch em/or use an ad-less version of the program.

I keep AdSubtract Pro running almost all the time. Ads are almost as bad a SPAM on the internet.
I hate ads in P2P applications as well. Forget buying overnet pro, I just block the ads with an external program.
Spyware is the devil. Despite what some people may say, Gator is 100% SPYWARE and intrusionware and is pure evil!! :devil :devil :devil

i use ad-aware once in a while and i have a pop-up blocker. advertisements aren't that bad, i mean after a little while, you stop noticing them altogether.

I love ads! I just installed gator for that mind pounding, never ending stream of seamingingly un-ending crap. Love the way its slows down my web browsing and hey, you gotta love those homepages that just keep coming back over and over. What will they think up next to keep the internet users happy??!!

Actually i use system mechanic to clean up my spyware...disk defrag my hard drive..clean my junk files..history..temp files...broken shortcuts.
It eliminates web popups...gets rid of duplicate files...cleans your registry....cleans up your tracks...you can recover your email or lost data...
It can tweak your computer...giving a boost to your internet speed...defrag your memory...
It can securley clean your hard drive...so if you want to sell or donate your hard drive..it will clean everything off except for the main programs that start up your computer.
It gives you a second recyclin bin and when you put files into it..you can set it on how many times it will overwrite the file...so the FBI software won't recover it.
Good program..but i still use adaware and spybot just in case it missed some....but so far so good.
You can get System Mechanic 4 Pro here...

If it slow down my computer or pop up a box outside the program that I am using or taking up too much band weight then I get ride of that. A picture(s) on a web page that is ad and allow me to goto that page to buy things that the ad about then OK. No extra software just a simple gif, jpg, or png file and a link. No exe, no js, no vbs, no cab, no rar, no zip and no scr files. Just use the ip address to find about they live and uses the right ad for there. If I from BC, I don't want to hear about something that I can only get in the US.

Here's a question on the same topic - what's the point of including ads in p2p apps? If someone's using a p2p app, it probably means they don't like spending money - what makes anyone think they're gonna spend it on their product?

..um ..if you use firefox 0.8 as your browser ...you get no pop-ups ...and pages load faster.
Add it to the above suggestions.

ducttape, if some advertising company is paying me to display their crappy ads, guess which option i'm going to do. I'mma get my little $4.66 check per day while people moan and groan about ads.
Plus, I like the Shooting/Violent ads, where you have to hit the monkey or slam dunk a lobster. Too bad they don't keep points...stupid ads.

There should be an option for "I don't have popup problems".

Alright, I guess I'm being a little hard - ads do have a place in the world (my dad actually works for an ad agenct), but idk, I've just been the type of person who doesn't buy stuff without first previewing it or reading a review. The only thing an ad will do is maybe make me think about the product - but chances are that if I'm at all interested in the industry (computers, etc.), I've already heard about it, and know whether it's good or not.
And, when it comes to Internet ads, I find the constant blinking and popping up annoying. I'd rather just not see them.

Ok whos these wise apples voting on all the old polls? Why oh why does the digging up of old threads happen every Saturday and Sunday? If I could find out who you are I would pee on your head!
This is a warning and a big fat joke!

EDIT.....sorry for the edit hun, but, (i give you my word) i am doing my best.....to take care of the problem!
Anyway, yeah, I think I'm about as paranoid as you are MonkeyMadness. I use Ad-aware, Spybot and SpySweeper regulary, have a huge hosts file and Mozilla w/addblock plugin with more filters than you could shake several large sticks at :p

I've used Spybot S&D and AdAware for some time but have had the occasional bit of spyware manage to get through unnoticed (CyberTrigger was the main one!!).
For anyone who's had the same issues... Try HiJackThis. - It's a very basic app that really just deals with dodgy registry keys but it still helps you find problems when the usual adware/spyware cleaners don't fix it!! ;)

You can't be too careful when it comes to cleaning out all of the adware, spyware, trojans etc on your computer . Right now I use spybot, ad-aware, x-cleaner, spysweeper and cool web shredder .They are all free , contain no added crap and are very effective and reliable. I would have to say that spybot is the best , but all make a valuable contribution to keeping my computer clean.
I also highly recommend spyware info (see link below) . Its an excellent site with great information on spyware and adware detection and prevention .It also has a great weekly newsletter you can subscribe to. And for those who like to support a worthy cause, they can always use donations to support their work . We need to keep great sites like this going .The work they do in providing help for those trying to stem the tide of malware on the internet is invaluable. I can assure you I am not in any way affiliated with the site but I am a frequent user, subscriber to the newsletter and a huge fan. :fire

Although Spy Sweeper is not free, i highly reccommend it. It has removed a lot of garbage left behind, that the others have missed.
