I recently and against my better judgment viewed my new welcome cd from verizon only to have it install a tracking program on my computer (Noptify.Exe) by James Tower Co. It seems to be trying to phone home, zgate.com but ZoneAlarm blocked its exit.
The ad ware is installed without the user’s knowledge or consent then hides once installed. The EXE resides as a hidden file in C/windows/docsandsettings/local/temp and 1 in prefetch. It can be deleted after killing the running process. This little monster isn't seen by Spybot or Ad aware and McAfee VS did nothing.

Thought you all should know, If you get Verizon Wireless skip the CD and opt for the online manuals. Cheers!

From the info i have found about it on security sites only tracks useage of the welcome cd and nothing else. So there is really nothing to worry about.

You must be using an old cd too since they have stopped using it.

verison is the new name of bell atlantic telephone.

there was a time a hundred years ago when one phone company ran all the phones. it was called "bell telephone". that was a monopoly. so, the government in the US made bell break up into smaller companies, and one of them is named verizon- a perfectly stupid name.

Found this on the net. It's Not Melissa but I don't want anything on my computer that tracks browser activity. and as far as being an old disc, my service started the 5th o Jan. 04'. Must still be going through the old stock, Yeah Right!

No it was called AT&T and was split up into the "Baby Bells" Which is where they all came from.

The name verizon came after a merger between GTE and some other company i forget.

Well that site is wrong because it only tracks whats on the CD and NOT browser activity. Thats coming from that program's site. And also explains why none of the spyware removal tools detect it.

They are better than the Cable ISPs, which have bandwidth limits, newsgroups limits, and around here at least the speed isnt as consistent as dsl.

I have verison DSL when im not in school and it has been pretty good.

I tend to kept my prefetch cleaned out anyways, saves a liitle time if you don't use certain programs, for a while.

Go looking out, thought.

You've probably heard of Verizon through their loss of a court case against the RIAA forcing them to release the names of a number of subscribers.

Personally, I think NTL are pretty good - it seems a bit hit-and-mis. I get good speeds for a good price with a good phone and TV package. The only thing that sucks about NTL is the Interactive services on digital TV. Having said that, services provided by broadcasters (eg. BBCi) seem pretty good.

I dont agree im on the 600kbs and i only see speeds of 20kbs at the max on dc++ where as people are dl off me at 30kbs or more and my speeds are crap on shareaza too. stupid ntl. my mate on blue yonder gets 100-200kbs all the time that aint fair. tv is crap for the interactive stuff aswell. the fone is alright for foning OZ and stuff but over all NTL sucks for me

Which other providers like cable were already releasing the names so the court case just forced verizon to do the same for that time period and didnt mean that other providers were "safer" at all.

People who share on P2P networks are always at some risk.

There's no such thing as "safe" on P2P at this current time.

our school has verizon t1, my house has comcast cable.

verizon's t1 is horrible with reliability, i'm not surprised more people don't praise god every morning we even have internet.

never had a problem with comcast, the price is only $10 more than it would have been to get dsl, is much faster, etc etc.

Are you sure that it isnt that the school doesnt have a very good set up or not enough bandwidth to meet the need? Because thats most likely the case.

As far as I remember, Charter Communications has released no personal information for the RIAA. They're a decent cable ISP with very fast downstream.

it's verizon. i don't think many school systems would need to make repairs on the lines coming in... on the lines connecting the schools would be understandable, but no... it's verizon's lines, not the school's.

and this is just internet. we have to deal with phones through them. i think if somebody has no dialtone at their house, it would be a priority to fix, right? no... we had to wait a week before someone could come out. good thing we didn't get robbed, have a fire, or need an ambulance.

At least they challanged it unlike the other ISPs. So in your opinion you would prefer someone who did nothing then to try to protect your due process..

isus dont you live out in the country? So its not surprizing then that it would take a while.

it's not THAT country... we live about 20 minutes away from a verizon... site? i don't know what you would call it. there are billing offices, trucks, blah blah blah.
