And if so, what do you think about it?

most of the things that software does can be configured using the winnt.sif file in an unattended xp installation (even though it's called unattended, you can still do whatever you want...the file just adds a lot more options.)

yep...i`ve tried it and it ain`t anything like using 98lite with windows 98SE or ME. most of what it (xplite) does can be achieved by disabling services like indexing, messenger etc a la the instructions given by black viper on his excellent website.disabling some of these services will save you more memory than the use of xp lite.it does remove media player, media player codecs, moviemaker and other memory gluttons (well not really...xplite just blocks the code for these components until you " reinstall " them then it "reads " them again.)
if you need space on your hard drive quickly or you don`t have much memory i suppose that it would be a short term way of doing things but in my experience xp can be unforgiving if large portions of it are suddenly removed. get more memory or a larger hard drive instead.

litepc seems to be a better choice for the options like getting windows 98 in 8mb or whatever.

Not running XP; still running ME . The 98lite looked interesting to put on the 'ol eMachine, but I need to relocate some mp3's before I can add ANY more software; I 'only' have 637 mb's free at the moment...
Does this have a decent restore point feature that works? The last time I tried to do a system restore using Windows it puked out, left me high and dry.

I was a great fan of 98lite and used it for a long, long time enjoying a heap of benefits from reduced drive space to quicker operation and significantly increased stability. So I've been waiting for LitePC for a while now...

I've given it a good going over on both 2000 and XP and, in the main part, am not nearly as impressed with it as I was 98lite before it.

It will happily remove all the components it claims to but very little mention is given to the consequences of their removal. For example, removing WMP8 from XP removes DRMClien.dll that WMP6.4 uses, so I had to graft it back in afterwards to get proper video playback. Removing Internet Explorer also disables system tray control so you are no longer able to control which system tray icons are hidden or shown on your task bar. Many of the other options can either be done yourself or result in minimal savings in drive space.

However, I love LitePC for 2 reasons: you can easily turn off Windows File Protection and remove the prefetch / dll cache and the driver databases. These 2 things alone can easily save you a couple of hundred MB, and I reckon LitePC is worth it for these reasons alone.

I wouldn't, however, expect LitePC to make any significant improvement to your PC's performance. With the exception of the drivespace gained from removing those two items above, there's little other reason to go ripping more stuff out as it'll barely make a difference and could well break something within Windows that you won't discover for several months.

Instead, use Black Viper's Service Guide mentioned above. It's this that'll save you RAM and CPU cycles by disabling unnecessary services. LitePC will just save you some disk space and give you a small, smug sense of satisfaction in knowing that you're ripping out components that Microsoft have done everything in their power to integrate into the OS in order to further their conquest of the Earth...
