This is starting to piss me off. Whenever I try to make a window a certain size, it doesn't remember the settings. It defaults back to "thumbnail view" (which is anoying to browse through 4000 mp3 folders like that), and goes to a smaller sized box.

I've tried unchecking the "remember window position and size" box in folder options, then rebooting, then enabling, then rebooting. And also doing this after cleaning all temp files.

I have no restore points to go from...had a virus that required me to turn that feature off. I forgot to turn it back on.

For some time now, I've been losing control over folders and how they remember things. I'm getting the impression there's a cache somewhere that I just need to clear.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Change your view to Details or List. Under Tools > Folder Options > View = Like Current folder.

Put the checkmark back in "remember window position and size". Make Explorer the size that you want it to be, then Close Explorer.

Now reopen Explorer to see the changes.

I forgot about that option. But now they're all detail listed, and the size and positions still won't remember. I tried reseting them also, no effect.

I have the same problem, and have had for a while. Certain folders remember my setting while others don't. Very irritating to have to keep changing them back all the time. Grrrrrr.

Btw, mine isn't due to any virus.

I was talking to CPU, he thinks you can change the cache size for remembering folders through the registry, although doesn't remember. I think I remember running across that a while ago to, but can't honestly remember at what site.

AHA! I rebooted and it did work!

I didn't think that registry trick worked at first, so I found http://tomsprograms.toms-world.org/WindowsXPFolderViewFix.php which allows you to set the number of folder views to remember. That didn't work either, so I rebooted. It works.
