I currently have a laptop and a desktop in the same room. I would like to share my D:\ drive (it's a 2nd hard drive in my desktop that I use to store all my music, videos, games, etc.)

I wanna be able to access it from the laptop, but I don't know how. What I have done so far is go into My Computer, Right Click on the D:\ Drive, and enable sharing it.

Now I go over to my laptop and right click on the My Computer icon and click Map Network drive, and I browse but I can't find it anywhere.

I remember I use to do this when I had another desktop directly connected with the main PC. But now I have the laptop and it connects through WiFi. It gets the singnal from the router which is like 5 feet away.

The laptop and PC aren't directly connected to each other (as I just explained) which makes it more complicated for me. I use a router now, and don't know how to do this with a router. :-(

Any suggestions of what I could do? I really have no clue what to do now since the laptop gets a signal from the router, and the router is plugged into the main PC.

Thanks in advance!

Are both computers on the same workgroup? I've got mine on the same workgroup name and they all see each other fine.

Is file and printer sharing turned on? Both machines need this.

Also, if the firewall in XP is turned on, I don't believe it will work. Any firewall at all can block tranfer.

One last thing, what OS are you running on both machines?

Fine, I guess that works, but if you're going to do it...why not do it right?

I suppose since they're right next to each other that would be easier...my networked pc's are 20-70' apart...so doing AIM is kinda a pain, but still, thats the EASY way out...who wants easy? ;)

So you can send a screwdriver over AIM now?

Damn! I thought viruses were the only things we had to worry about getting over AIM. ;)

PS. Do we have to download anti-screwdriver a patch or what?

You can allways use trillian to block remote screw driver attacks, or simply "RSDA". Its a special plugin for the pro version.

Ahhhhhh. I thought you were telling him to just use AIM to transfer, which would have worked. it kinda surprised me that you suggested something that simple.

aaah the joys of mapped network drives...let me sing thee praises...

heres a little trick: \\computername\c$
-lets you right into the c drive. Make sure its shared though. (substitute whatever letter u want for c...makes life easy)
