If you used a program like Boot XP or something like it, than when you installed SP1 it would change the Kernal..the old boot screen would no longer work. If you didn't use a program before SP1..than I'm lost & have no idea. Here is a link to Boot XP if you want to give it a try:

I have had XP on my home pc with sp1+ru1 installed on it It runs fine don't have any problems it's been installed for over 4 months. I would have to agree with lion7718 that you possibly corrupted the windows kernel with a program like bootxp(that only applies if you do infact have sp1 installed) if not I am also lost I would just reformat. that tends to be the main fix for windows os's lol

WOAH, before you format your computer, wait for a few more suggestions and try a few more things. I've never heard of that problem being caused by pirated software.
Can you even get into safe mode? On boot, randomly tap F8 right after the BIOS, it will bring up a screen giving you options, choose Safe Mode.
If you can get into windows that way, try removing any programs like bootxp (as lion suggested), then try removing SP1. You did ask it to make a backup....RIGHT?
If you didn't have a backup, you could allways try system restore.

I actually had that problem with keys. All it did, was cancel setup. It checks before installing SP1 if you have a valid key or not.
At least...thats what SP1 did, if they changed something other than Java VM in SP1a, thats news to me.

u got lucky or u have a legal copy of xp set up is auto when u install sp1 .microsoft put this in as anti piricy sp1 installs fine but when u try to restart it asks for your key no if u have a pirate copy it wont let u restart ive got a few mates who fell for this they had to reformat its safe to install all other critical updates other than sp1 there is a site that shows u how to get around this but ive forgot wich one this page explanes ithttp://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/windowsxpsp1.asp

Even on that site, it says that if you don't have a valid key, it won't let you access updates.
Maybe I got lucky though, or maybe you had bad luck with your copy.
Oh, and what do you mean "if" I have a legal copy? Of course I paid MS a ton of money.

Wrong. If SP1 had anything to do with it, do you think starting in Safe Mode would help?!
The only thing that happens with SP1 is that it refuses to install if you have an 'invalid' CD-key.
If you really want SP1(a), do a Google search for 'Slipstreaming Windows XP SP1'. That'll show you how.

m sure its the bootscreen thingy...theres something known as a loginui.exe (spell check-not sure) and another similar thing . if you have dual boot then replace both of them by default, m sure if u search on net you will get it...
i dont think it can be piracy thing as 90%pirated comps keys are fckgw .... and it dosent install sp1 on it in the first place.

He stated that it crashes before the Windows boot window, so I doubt he can get in to Safe Mode, altho pressing F8 a gajillion times doesnt hurt.
Now to the meat of things. When you install SP1, it basically, replaces everything. Those of you geeky enough to have watched this unpack know what I mean. After you unpack SP1, and it needs to reboot, what is has to do is replace your old XP files and association with the new ones, and clean up, and that's where it is puking out.
It is just as likely that in this process, there's a device driver problem. Or a chipset driver problem, or a . . . well you can guess it to death.
The question still remains, how and to what extent can he make forward progress? THIS IS THE QUESTION that we should all be ready to tackle, what if XP gets botched?
The answer for everyone that doesnt enjoy reading scorchie posts, is to be prepared for it, and not have anything valuable on your C: drive. Have backups of your software, and even use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" to export your environmental preferences to a D: drive etc.
For all the time it takes to fiddle with workarounds, I still wouldnt trust the results. Long before now, he could have reinstalled XP, and his drivers and SP1, AND turned off unwanted Services, and reinstalled his apps.

i have a legit key, worked before on other comps for installing sp1
btw my comp was activated before reinstalling sp1 and microsoft states that i wont need to activate it so piracy isn't a factor in this problem
i don't think sp1 causes your comp to not restart though even if you have a pirated key, where can i find information about this chelsey12?

If you pop in the XP disc, then reboot, I think there are some recovery options, you could try using those to replace system files, or at least get a diagnostic on whats wrong.
If you can't autorun it in the BIOS, you can also try the 6 floppy boot disk set for XP. They're available on the MS site.

Do you have another computer? Pop that drive in as slave, then either burn the stuff or transfer it to another computer.
This is why everybody should do regular backups (like MS recommends when installing SP1).

just a FYI, If you change your CD-KEY for Micro$oft Windows XP (pirated or legal) you have about a 95% chance of a successful SP1 Update/Install. (I.E. No hanging up after SP1 install, etc) If you DO happen to hit the bad 5%, then take the extra 5 seconds to change it again. lol
(at least in all my tests & installs this has proven to be true)
I would recommend doing a clean install. If you don’t have a second computer, or second hard drive lying around, you could spend $50 or less, pick up a small hard drive, install an operating system on it, and burn your data off the original drive.

wait so if i have another comp, it will automatically recognize my hd and i will be able to recover my files from that comp?
phalkon30
November 27th, 2003, 02:30 PM
Yes. Just hook up the hard drive that isnt working to a working computer (when off). Set the non working HD to Slave on the primary IDE channel. It will connect to the middle connector on the IDE cable.

i wont have to reformat the hd in order to recover the files rite?
last time i did this with a 180gig hd i had to reformat so im just making sure
phalkon30
November 27th, 2003, 04:41 PM
When you format the drive, you LOSE ALL FILES. Thats what formating is!
Move the files OFF OF THE DRIVE, then format it. You'll have to start from scratch with nothing on the drive, so make sure all your files are backed up.

Im glad to see a thread get back on track. If I thought that you could use the Recovery Console in conjunction with SP1 botch, I would have mentioned it.
Phalkon and krypto are steering you in the right direction, just keep in mind, you cant move 160Gb worth of data to a 20Gb drive, so either buy a large enough drive, or burn baby burn.
Or, better yet, for the umpteenth thousand time . . . .
STOP PUTTING YOUR DATA ON YOUR FUCKING C DRIVE
Whew, glad I got that out, you people cant take hints.

Yes, if it is partitioned and formatted (which it is) it should be just fine. Only the O/S is screwed up by what your telling us.

How much should i expect to pay for a harddrive in the range of 200 gigabytes?
And better yet a site that I can purchase it reasonably, *a trusted site* that is lol.

Zipzoomfly has pretty good prices, not always the best, but free shipping, and very reliable. Also check out New Egg, theyre very good too.

Be sure that it specifies that the drive has an 8 Mb buffer.
