It really depends on the room (shape, materials, objects in room, etc), and where you'll want the best sound.

Obviously, you want the center channel in the middle front, left front in the left front, etc, and the back left in back of you on the left.

If they're small speakers, try to get them midway to the ceiling or higher. You don't want too high, but high enough the sound isn't lost into objects on the floor.

As for the sub placement, I've heard you want it in back of you for the best effect, but most people tend to put it in the front. Try facing it at the wall, or facing it torwards you, depending on the room and speaker, you may get better results one way or the other.

Once you have the speakers set up, even out the sound levels. The front usually are a little louder than the rears, and obviously the speakers closest to you should be the quietest so you can hear the other speakers.

My creative system came with little diagrams of the best places to put speakers. It said put the sub in the corner of the room, facing out. Satilite speakers can all be placed in front of you, as long as the rear ones are closer. I have mine wall mounted behind me.
Remember not to turn your rear speakers on too loud. You arn't supposed to hear them all the time during TV or films as most of the action is in front of you.

I can't imagine why anyone would want a bunch of tripwires running across the room.

If it wasn't for the wiring, I'd love to have a 5.1 setup.

we ran our dolby prologic, sub cable under the carpet along that wall and in the attic cables for the rears.

I cant see you with 5:1 speakers Compu.

Because Dottie sounds so much more sexy through the onboard pc speaker.

I was thinking of getting some 5:1 speakers that i can use for my pc and tv. What are the best brands for 5:1 speakers?

Yah, I hate that idea too... Unless you have a neat way to hide the wires, it looks sloppy. Effective uses of walls, furniture and rugs can make it look ok.

I've heard of UWB speaker technology that are wireless now! That's what you need!

As far a sub placement goes, it really doesn't matter. BEcause of the acoustics of the enclosure, if you have a decent sub, it should sound pretty much the same no matter where it is. Put it somewhere convienient for you...

Yeah, you could set up wireless speakers, but they still need power somehow. You'd just have to replace or recharge batteries all the time.
