A wierd wierd problem

i have 2 files semi downloaded from irc. they are half done.
when i try to change thier name or move them they say some progrem is using tham and that i cant. its doind it off line too, after mulltiple reboots and they are the only ones doing it.
anyone has a clue what it is how i can find out what the exact process that is using them....?

ts 2 avi files, they cant possibly be a virus or a trojen just deleting them is not a problem. i want to know which program is using them

or if you don't wanna delete them, it's a safe bet that explorer itself isn't using the files, nor are any protected tasks... so just ctrl-alt-del, and close as many processes as you can. be careful though, i think one of windows' processes will start a 60 second countdown to shutdown if you hit it.

I was going to ask if they were avi's, but I thought I'd recommend that program first.

There is a bug in windows that makes windows try to look through an entire .avi and find all key frames (or something to the effect of using all processor usage just by passing the mouse over the file icon).

Try using this registry key to fix this bug.

o my... that actually worked.... i deleted it..
any side effects like.... not beeing able to use avi file ever again? or nothing is changed but the problem i had and solved?

another thing was soleved by the reg, when i used to press properties it would take hima few seconds like its reading the whole file or somthing (big avi files).
now its showing the details instantly like it should have.

wanna tell me what the problem was exactly? im intrested to know.

Its a problem with how Windows keep track of things in the Master File Table. With NTFS, and XP, files are written as streams, but they can still be highly fragmented. There are some tricks to be able to "snatch" the file back, but its too hard to explain in a forum.

Just use MOB to move or rename your files.

Basicly all you've lost is the ability in windows to view some basic properties about .avi files dirrectly through windows. Prgrams such as Gspot will still tell you though.

That's a pretty resonable explanation, not the only one, but the predominate one. Explorer.exe is what has grabbed the file, I have researched this and spoken to MS about it.

In Explorer, you know that you can change your VIEW to a number of ways. Its mainly the DETAIL view that mucks this up, and when Explorer tries to do thumbnails.

I find that if you change to the LIST view, then change the order of the files, you can sometimes get on with what you need to do. You might want to select the LIST view, then, go to TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW, and Apply to All Folders.

There is a distinct difference between what phalkon30 described, and what my name described. These are two different issues.
