apple today released a 20" imac and dual a 1.8ghz g5.
the imac comes in for as low as $1759 and the dual g5 $1999.
a well equipped g5 with a 20" apple lcd is $3807.
(well equipped = 1gb ram, radeon 9800 pro, and applecare)

I wish I had money. Really. I'd love to have a mac to play with.

BUT THEY'RE SO BLOODY EXPENSIVE!!!
For £100 less than a bottom-spec eMac, I'm building with an Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB DDR400, 4x DVD+/-RW, Radeon 9600 Pro, 80GB Seagate and a Shuttle SN45G (nForce2 Mobo). The figures just don't add up.

check this out: http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html click "ADC HARDWARE PURCHASE PROGRAM STORE" and enjoy :)
you pay $100, and join the adc. you get huge discounts off hardware, which is how you can get a dual 1.8ghz g5 and a monitor, for less than $4000. these discounts apply everywhere; you can get an emac for $703. if you bump the memory up (which is suggested, since it only has 128mb) it's still under $750 bucks.

Couple of problems...
1. It's US-only (I'm in the UK)
2. That'd still make £600 for an eMac!
I love Apples and in particular OSX, but I just can't justify the cost.

They're pretty. :)
I'm on a mac now. Sometimes when I want to get away from my roommate, I go to the library and browse around on the G4s here. It's a nice change from the hp laptop I have.

Hey, remember when 486dx computers was 2000 grand.. back in the day of just a floppy with no cd-rom =) If i opened up ITUNES, i would had the recording industy sign a contract buying 10000 macs over the next 3 years. ANd lowering price for consumers on them =)
