emule port... does it matter?

many servers and more are adding to msg you to change your port from the usuall emule port to anything betwin 1000-9000 or what ever the range is.

if that is the case, why did emule/edinkey had a specific port in the first place?

it realy doesnt matter what port you are useing?

(and how about kazaa and other programs? it doesnt matter what port you are using ither?)

I ain't got a clue mate. I was looking at the eMule forum and some people who change their port number say they get better results, others say they don't.

All I know is that you should change the port number if you are using a Firewall or router and you're having problems.

It isn't a "correct" port, it's a default port. If you choose another port there is no reason for your id to be low. If you want to check this then change your port and click here (http://www.thedonkeynetwork.com/connection_test) to test your connection. Remember to change the port number to the one you chose.

Some people might benefit from changing ports as some ISPs will restrict bandwidth for ports commonly used in p2p.

my gasman knows that he has the choice of ports between 1 and 65535 and that the optimal port range is between 1024 and 65535 because under the 1024 port many ports are already in use!

If you heard that changing the port lead to better results: bullsh*t, if you isp doesn`t block or throttle the port. If you are on TDSL for example, don't think of it. changing the port to something like 1337 is always good for the pen*s length (if you have one :shy ) and so leads to better results ;)

I don't think it really makes a difference but it is always better to stick with what the software came with as defaults. Because then you are backed by the creator of the software that these port(s) one is a UDP connection other is normal tc/ip connection are selected for a purpose to ensure that with those setting the software will offer back optimal performance(connection wise). But I mean if you had to you can of course change the port for connecting through but the problem that lies ahead is that selected port going to sucessfully work. A time for some trial and error if you are really interested . Personally I leave them as is and I never have a connection problem other than the server I am trying to connect to is already full.
