need help, but may not be what you think

I am wanting to know how to start using the IRC and NewsBoards for my P2P pleasure.
Ive been using Kazaa Lite (and Diet Kazaa) and Im looking to broaden my horizons by learning the other ways to do what Kazaa does. Can anyone help me with this?
Is there a tutorial somewhere for this? Help.
