You probably downloaded an installer. Double click on it and it will install.

Correct!!
But if you downloaded them from a p2p app, it would be a good idea to run a virus scan on them first!!

c7innamon no one can help much unless you give details. Yet the minute you do I expect they will be removed because you downloaded your software. It's sort of a catch-22.
Anyway here's my blind attempt; if what you got is zipped try using winzip to manage the installation.

There could be a way around this and still be within forum rules. Does the file look like this? If it does, then it's zipped. And aglo's advice will work.

I hope this is not against the rules for giving this info. I downloaded a pc software that helps build web sites/ pages. It is not "zipped", I ran a virus check on it. I downloaded it in kazaa, and then went to "locate" the file. when I did, the picture next to it is of an open box and when I try opening it, I can't get it extracted. Right now, I am so frustrated with this, has anyone downloaded something like this and been able to use it? If so, what steps did you do?

What is the extention of the file?

If the files extract once you've double-clicked on it, the Setup installer should launch immediately. If it doesn't, you might want to try downloading it again.

If the installer didn't launch automatically, go to where the files were unzipped and double-click the installer.

I assume you have a file that you downloaded from a p2p network.
It would help a lot if you could tell us what the extension of the file is (example: MP3, EXE, JPEG, RAR, ISO, etc...).

Not knowing any more details, I'd say it sounds like you got a corrupt file. Try getting a different version of the same proggie. (usually there are several to choose from)

then its either a virus/trojan, and since you ran a virus check on it that is unlikely.
That means the installer is corrupted and it wont work and there is no way to fix it.

And, if what rainbowdemon guessed is true, it was supposed to be a self-extracting archive.
Try redownloading the file from somewhere else. I recommend using
A. A different network (no fasttrack - Kazaa, Grokster, etc.).
B. A verified site, if you can find one that has this software.

virus-like executibles are less than 256 kb in size, if it is larger, it is most likely not a virus. also remember that some executibles are archives in disguise, like extraction programs. some of the old executible extractor files required a programs like winzip and winrar to uncompress them. I would go ahead and install winzip, or winrar (my persinal choice), and retry the file. Also note that in order to open some files on kazaa, you have to change the file extension. you could try changing it to zip, rar, or iso depending on what you think you downloaded.

I am going to try renaming it. Thanks so much for all your info. I still have alot to learn about this whole downloading thing. I have tried the winzip but I didn't like it much, I am going to try the other.
Thanks so much for everyones comments.

You're better off buying the software you want to use. HTML editors don't cost an arm and a leg. In fact, you can obtain many free of charge. Don't ever trust anything you download from a file-sharing network. Plenty of things can be built into executables with malicious intent, and it won't be picked up by your virus scanner. As a computer-newbie (haven't we all been there?) be careful. Better yet, don't touch such things only to safe a few bucks.

Just in case you are not aware, there are plenty of freeware applications you can download and use for free that may be better for you.
I would not recommend downloading applications off kazza, perhaps edonkey network would be much better for you.
In any case go look at http://webattack.com and check out the freeware section.
If your interested in edonkey network learn more about it here. Do a search and or ask more questions.

Some advice for downloading progs of fasttrack (one too many viruses did me in...but hey...if your reformatting soon anyway or something) I would search for the program I wanted and then download the one with the largest file size...kinda simple and stupid I know, but its the little tricks that help out people fresh outta the gate.

I appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions, but what I needed was advice on how to playback or use an application that I downloaded on making web pages. (I can't say that name of course). I do not have the time to learn all the HTML and heard that certain pc software to make these are very easy to use. They are not cheap, they cost at least $100.00 up to $300.00, the ones from the website anyway and I can't seem to find them in the stores. So please, if anyone HAS downloaded PC software, what did you do AFTER it downloaded so that you could use it?
Thanks.

Try one of these freebies (http://www.webattack.com/freeware/webpublish/fweditors.html). Take a look at the ratings, look at the screenshot, visit the makers' websites, and choose what you think will suit you best. A freeware HTML editor should be good enough if you're just starting with HTML.

Whoa... this has become way too clogged with crap.
heh, ok first off, the guy that said n00b and has no real advice needs a warning. Second, you shouldn't download programs off of KaZaA/FastTrack at all, as its most likely the BSA (Business Software Alliance) that pays people to spread files. This is especially true if the program has less that 10 seeds. (excuse the BT lingo) Make sure the file has a good rating, has an exceptional file size and extention for the program you want, and that it hasnt been renamed. For instance if it's named thisprogram.rar.exe, it has been renamed so it will showup in the programs search, you must then rename it to thisprogram.rar
Good luck, and I must recommend BitTorrent (Suprnova) or the ed2k network for programs/large files.
