Whenever I try downloading something on ie, i never get that status bar. All it says is how much is opened. It's pretty annoying, does anyone know what I can do; I have Windows XP Pro.

Could you maybe post a screen shot? I think I know what you're talking about...but not completely sure.

ok how about back tracking a bit for us...

when did you first notice this?

it might just be that theme your using, or a bad combination of new and old theme.

i think its "selected items" color that does the trick not 100% sure right now.

it's not a theme problem, notice it says the estimated time is not known.

in order to get a percentage (and a progress bar) and the remaining time, you have to know the file size...

the problem is that his browser isn't getting the filesize, it's just going.

i bet there's a KB article about it somewhere...i'll look around.

this is the only article i could find that relates to your problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;154551

but you're obviously running IE6 or above, so that supposedly doesn't apply...

Some sites just do that...but all shouldn't.

Try downloading this .zip (its a song if you're wondering). It should show the correct time.

I notice that your example is a ftp site and I know that some ftp site doesn't send the size of the file to IE or ftp program. I notice this when I download anything from alot of ftp site in Windows 98 just like you shown. Have you try a http site?

try Netscape or Opera they might not have this problem.

I using Windows 98SE and not Windows XP so I not sure why that happens.
The only time I pass this problem is on some ftp sites.

I think, but I could be wrong, that a value is not being set that tells the size of the file. If Internet Explorer looks at this value and is a 0 and there more to download it can't display the progress bar. Have you try to get Windows to repair Internet Explorer and if that doesn't work look for a file name ie6setup.exe and run it and couse the custome option and reinstall it.

Over an IE problem? Just use Mozilla or any other browser, and even better, use an FTP client for all your FTP downloading needs. Reformating just because of that is really not the easiest solution.

the problem is between you(the client browser) and the server because you are requesting to download such file, the request is replied back to client to begin the send now it must be that the server is not telling the client browser how big the total file size is, only that you have downloaded such amount so far. I get that problem some times when downloading stuff through IE. Just a theory :)

Why aren't you using a download manager?
