I don't know if you care....
But you could copy a DVD with DVD X Copy and then copy the same DVD with CloneDVD, take a screenshot of the same frame in each copy, and tell us if you can notice any differences in blockiness/quality.

Yes, there is no perceived loss of quality.
But there is a difference in quality between the different DVD copying software transcoding engines. You'd just have to look closely at single frames to see the differences.
I just wondered if you cared enough to check. Nevermind.

I think to the average user, there will be an acknowledged loss of quality. But I think, to the average user, the difference in quality loss between X Copy and CloneDVD is negligable.
That being said, DVDXCopy Xpress is pretty cool.

Well, my dad just brought a burner. I was planning on trying both dvdxcopy and CloneDVD. I'm a really big fan of Elby products, but I've also heard that DVDxCopy is almost too good to be true.
We don't have any blank media, but I can try copying something when we do get some. Any program you'd recommend to get screen shots that will work with video? Prnt Scrn doesn't work.

Print Screen works in PowerDVD.
any vers of clone dvd u could recomend?
The newest version of CloneDVD has a free trial here (http://www.elby.ch/en/products/clone_dvd/).
I'm sure you could "buy" a serial # for it if you like it.

PowerDVD also has a little screen shot button down on the control panel that has a picture of a camera on it.

I use a program called DVD Decrypter and DVD2One. DVD Decrypter just extracts the contents of the DVD and DVD2One seperates Movie from Menu. In DVD2One you could either keep movie only or movie and menus, but the movie quality is lessend with menu if you want it on one CD. I was new to this scene about a week ago and now I have "backed up" more than 30 movies using this strategy, its easier and faster than some programs that claim "all-in-one." Its just a waste of time and money of you use something else, but then again that just my opinion. The programs can be found and downloaded almost anywhere.

I have used dvdxcopy express for a few backups *cough*. It is incredible and the compression is excellent. It has its own forum on afterdawn (http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/) and reading some threads there it seems you might see a slight drop in video quality if you compress a dual layer DVD onto a single disc and watch it on a really big TV. I have to say that on my 15" TFT there is no visual difference and the soundtrack seems perfect. One of the rare products that meets all the makers claims. Some movies are too good for even the best DivX ...and rentals are cheap and disks are cheaper!

Just tried both CloneDVD and DvdxCopy Express.
Clonedvd wouldn't even try to copy, it saw CSS and said no. I even tried playing it in power dvd first to unlock it.
DVDxcopy worked great. The copy produced looked as good as the dvd to me.I could still screenshot if somebody wants...but I don't see the point really. I backed up the matrix reloaded, which has very high quality shots, and it looked identical to dvd.

I'll try using DVD Decrypter to rip an ISO then burn with clonedvd, but it kinda defeats the purpose if I could use nero to do the same thing after using DVD Decrypter. I was pretty disapointed in elby for following the law.

It's not that simple; Nero can't burn a DVD ISO because most DVD movies won't fit on one DVD±R. You need to mount the ISO and run it through CloneDVD to remove the menus (wasted space) and compress the movie down to size.
If DVD X Copy loses in court they'll have to remove CSS decryption from their product and you'll have to use DVD Decrypter first anyway.

Uh...you have to use a program called "ANYDVD" with CloneDVD. That way you won't get the little copyright messages.
Works great for me. Good luck with your backups.

I've been recommending a new program called AutoGK. It uses Gordian Knot to get the best quality, but it automates all the processes so you don't have to understand what's going on under the hood.
Here is a Guide (http://www.doom9.org/autogk.htm).

i have dvd x copy platinum, but I'm not getting my burner til christmas (oh the agony) ;) so I haven't installed it yet.
anyway, I saw that there are quite a few options within the program (on their site). for example, u can choose the amount of compression for every chapter. Just wanted to know if it really is as good as it says it is.
Also, what programs are available to do all sorts of burning to dvds? For, say, backing up data.

You only need one program, DVD2SVCD. It's the mutt's nuts mate. It basically runs in batch mode the best programs out there for ripping a DVD and coverting it to a SVCD. I assume that's what you meant when you asked about the 80min CD-R. I used some of these programs seperately when I made SVCD's but this program makes it so easy. All you have to do is put a DVD in your drive, hit convert and 7 hours later you have 2 or 3 bin/cue files ready for burning. The end result looks better than converting from a DivX/XviD file as you normally would if you downloaded a avi file.
You need TMPG or CCE also, as you convert the AVI to MPEG2. You'll also need the aspi drivers.
http://www.dvd2dvd.org/
The only other thing is that you may need to tweak it a bit. Especially the bitrate tab as it's set to 740, you need to change it to 800. Also decide how much time you want to squeeze on a disc. If it's a film over 2 hours I'll put it on 3 discs. I would also advise setting a default output folder on the Misc tab to keep all your shit together. Then when you've done you can delete the folder. You can also recover a project on the Misc tab. And make sure you have about 15 GB space on your h/d.
Go to this page, save it as a .mht file (Go to file> save as> web archive).

If you need answers to questions,

Taken from Doom9,
>All of you who have used CCE previously or created an SVCD with another tool than FlaskMpeg and the bbMPEG plugin know that SVCD creation isn't exactly fun as it requires many different tools and many steps. To cut a long story short: All your cries for help have been heard and DVD2SVCD is the program for you if you simply like to enter the number of CDs, which audio and subtitle streams you want, then enter the DVD in the drive, press a button and when you come back a few hours later you have the CD images ready to be burned. Lately support for PVA (digital broadcast) and AVI input has been added, along with TMPG support.
DVD2SVCD combines many programs together: vStrip to rip the DVD (best ripper around), DVD2AVI to create a DVD2AVI project, Mpeg2dec and Avisynth for the fastest frameserving from DVD2AVI to CCE, BeSweet for high quality audio processing, video encoding in CCE, TMPG or Procoder, then applying pulldown flag in case of an NTSC video, multiplexing video and audio using bbMPEG and finally creating SVCD images for burning using VCDImager. Furthermore DVD2SVCD supports multiple audio streams and selectable subtitles (the latter only works on standalone players). The program comes as a complete package that contains all the free softwares required. You only have to add CCE SP or TMPG.

Hi phalkon, this thread is in danger of becoming a little mouldering old but here is what you need to make perfect copies of copy protected DVDs using elby CloneDVD:
AnyDVD from Slysoft
This application is amazing. It runs in the background in real time and descrambles all the copy protection, macrovision and region code of any DVD while you rip/watch! Basically it means every DVD is unprotected and elby CloneDVD and similar progs will recognise the DVDs as such and allow you to make you backups *ahem* *cough* *harrumph*.
I just started using elby CloneDVD in conjunction with AnyDVD and it is better than DVDxCopy, the GUI is superior, it presents the contents of the disc in a far easier to understand way and it is all round brilliant.
I am currently making my third CloneDVD backup of the evening and you know what? I feel the urge to support the MPAA by paying a visit to my local DVD rental outlet first thing in the morning.
AnyDVD ed2k hash can be found on Sharereactor.

Does any one else use DVD Shrink? I've pretty much tried all of the dvd coping options and DVD Shrink was my pick. DVDXCOPY worked well sometimes, but others I would get occasional studdering in playback. Anyways to anyone who hasn't tried DVD Shrink I highly recommend. DVD Shrink gives you alot more control than most of the other guys.
