and how about the ol' hard drive?

i have a special edition 40gb western digital. it's ata100. the 8mb cache is nice, but it would probably be faster to get a ata133 hard drive with only 2mb buffer.

but damn, this western digital is loud. and high-pitched. i stuffed socks into the drive cage with it to cut down on the whine, but it's still noticeable. i'm hoping that the sock will make it produce just enough heat to kill it, then i can get one of seagate's 21dB, 7200rpm drives. but those only have 2mb buffer though. gah!!

Both drives are old Fujitsu makes. C-drive is an old 8.4 gig, and D is a 40 gig. Both reasonably quiet, and I always like a small C drive, as I am then forced to transfir my files to the larger drive defragging them in the process, and not worring about a large file loss if I have to reload windows on C.

the one thing i wish windows could do, that i like about osx, is that if you install a program, then need to reformat/reinstall, you don't hafta reinstall the program. all the dll's that get thrown into the windows folder get wiped, and then you're forced to reinstall the program :-\ that takes a lot of time sometimes (like ms flight sim 2000)

I've got an 80 Gig IBM and a new 120 Gig Seagate Barracuda (which is really quiet). All my music goes on the Seagate, everything else on the IBM.

One old system I'm running has a 1.4 gig Fujitsu drive... I've taken it apart before yet it still runs. Thought about a window mod but what the hell..no one will see it.

Isus, I've got way to many to count...

IBM's
Seagates
WD's
Off brand ones made in the US
Maxtors

lol All different sizes... ones I'm using right now are 2x WD SE 160gb 7200 rpm drives an one Maxtor 80gig 7200 rpm. :P

my hard drive isn't always hard
So you use a floppy drive? Man thats got to suck having that small of a drive...

I've got 2 40gig WD drives, I might get a raid controller sometime to add in another 30 gig quantum fireball I just found in my room. Or I suppose I could just go and buy a 120 gig for $100 at newegg.

Hmm, not always hard, it could be a diet problem.

IBM 120GB with 8mb something fancy (I'm guessing cache as its been mentioned a few times)
The other I've no idea. 30GB of something old.
I'm really not a hardware person, but I'm kinda excited about what computer part "part 3" is going to be.

Anyone who thinks any hard drive could take advantage of the difference between ATA133, 100, or maybe even 66 is kidding themselves. You can burst little things out of the cache fast, but most stuff comes off the hard drive slower than ATA66.

Shitbox 1:

WD 80 GB 8MB
WD 120 GB 8MB

Shitbox 2:

(4) IBM 30 GB 7200 RPM 2MB
Hooked up to a a RAID controller in two striped arrays.

it must be reallllly generic wonderboy... i've never seen a 4800rpm drive before... the closest to that i have seen are 4200 (the ones in laptops) and 5400 (the lowest i have seen advertised for a desktop)

Wonderboy, if you installed windows on the 60 gig, I think your windows would run quite a bit faster, it would at least load things faster (like games, or even windows).

I have 7 drives in this machine and 7 in my other one too. The old one is just a backup and the drives are smaller.

This one has:
2 maxtor 80 gig 7200 rpm 2 meg cache ata133.
2 maxtor 80 gig 5400 rpm 2 meg cache ata??.
2 western digital 250 gig 7200rpm 8 meg cache ata100.
1 western digital 200 gig 7200rpm 8 meg cache ata100.

The other machine has seagate, maxtor, and western digital. My son's and my wife's have a variety too. I have not noticed much difference in speed, reliability, or noise with respect to any brand of hard drive. The seagate scsi drives are probably the most noisy. The ibm scsi drive is quiet. In the last few years I have had 4 hard drives go bad. 2 maxtor and 2 western digital.

I got a 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax, an 80GB IBM Desktar and an 80GB Seagate Barracuda. I need another now though cause they just get filled up so quick.

I got a couple of other shit drives like a 6GB Maxtor and and 6GB IBM taken from a laptop for fucking around with.
