An Odd stupid message

Hi ALL

I have an odd problem. I have a maxtor 60 GB HDD partitioned into 4 partitions C,D,E and F and all of them are in NTFS format and quite healthy. I just noticed a strange thing which happens only in case of The "F" partition (on which i store all the setup files of my programs).With most programs stored on that partition, When i want to setup a certain program, a message like this appears to me and i really don't know what does it mean (PLZ see the screen shot below). For example, as it is shown in the screen shot, i was trying to setup a program called "secret agent" which has the path: F:\PC Utilites\Secret Agent\sa32v32e.exe, i receive this message which i am quite sure that it has nothing to do at all with this specific program (coz it happened with some other setup files also) and also has nothing to do with the Operating system (coz i still have the same message with XP and 2K). As a workaround, i move or copy the whole program's folder and place it on the root of F: and it works but i really don't know what i am doing and also this workaround is not convenient at all coz i want to run my progs from their original location + I think something wrong with the F: partition although all drive tests I used revealed that this partition is absolutely OK. Any idea from someone about why this message appears and how to overcome it will be so appreciated coz it’s really bothersome . Sorry for the long post and THX in advance

It depends on how the program installs itself...

Seems like it's looking for some file the program itself copied to C:\windows\system

I'm lost on the 16bit app part unless your using some old ass 95/3.1 programs..lol

It even happened when i tried to install Norton utilities 2002 too and i had to copy the entire folder of that program to the root of F: so it has nothing to do all with 16 or 32 bit apps !!!

This usually happens when the creation of short names has been disabled. Are you using installshield or some other 3rd party installer? Third party installers tend to have this problem alot even after the implementation of long names with Windows NT.

If this registry setting appears with the value 1 at the end, then short names are not created.

CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\
NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation=1


If that is so, just change the value to 0 and it should fix the problem. If the key does not exist, then short names are created by default and it's something else.

Hope it works. Remember to backup your registry before doing this. If it doesn't, then let us know.

I had this same problem. I wish I could remember how I fixed it....I think it had something to do with enabling a service and repairing the .msi installer program in windows. The problem came back a week later.

I eventually reformatted windows a few weeks later because it drove me nuts. It was also a norton program.

Well, i am sure u r right coz yes, I changed this key among many several other Tweaks to the OS so i 'll change it back right now and see if it'll make difference - THANKS

well if the programs u said are setup executable files then you should not have a problem. using the msi exe install shield program can fix this.

btw if you just moved the files to another part of the drive you will get this message. but since u got this message before hand maybe u need to have some additional files to make the program run.

this happen to me to many times.
for example my situation was a little different because all i would do is install a program to my c drive and I then wanted to take that file folder and put it on another harddrive to use.

some programs work mainly executables that are not dependent on the registry to make the program work. however it seems to me you need to get this tool by microsoft.

specifically the msi install shield program. u can also google a search for it.
i had this problem and it was able to resolve certain components to make my program work again. seems like many others had the same problem.

Ooops, i made a mistake. I remembered that i just installed Windows 2000 Pro just yesterday and i haven''t tweaked it yet so the value of "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation" is still 0 (and i am still get the same message in 2K) and b4, when i was using XP and tweaked the value of this key by making it 1, i was having the same problem so it seems to me now it has nothing to do with this key

May i ask about the name of a trustworth program which can make a Thorough "Physical" surface scan to an NTFS hard disk so that it can see if there is any defect on the hard disk surface or not ??? - Thx

This is just another thought. F:/Net Utilities/SECRET~1...

Rename "Net Utilities" to "NetUtilities" without the space between the 2 words. Make sure that the rest of the path doesn't have any directory names with spaces in them.

If it works, I'll explain why. If it doesn't, I won't bother.

I did that and didn't work also and in fact i didn't beleive that it will work coz i was working b4 with the same folder naming without problems b4 but don't know what's wrong
