Hey
I really like Knoppix Linux on the Cd. But everytime i start up i lose everything I did (Which I expected) So is there any Linux O.S that I can use that saves everything i do to the harddrive but keeps Windows XP still on my system?
Please give me full details for i dont have to keep asking questions!
Sorry for all the questions but i really like Linux. Just gotta get all the right knowledge for it :green3

You can install Linux on a different partition than Windows XP. When you start your computer, it will ask you which OS you want to use. I recommend Red Hat or Mandrake since they are the easiest to install for most linux newbies.

For your booting needs, try Acronis OS Selector.
http://www.acronis.com/products/osselector/
Many OS's on 1 computer. Will do the partitioning and formating (many different file systems supported) without losing data.
Never used before but heard good things about it.
Not free though :(

If you are really comfortable with Knoppix, then install Debian since Knoppix is basically Debian on a CD.

BTW: Use and distro you like, OS Selector allows you to run any one you like without losing your original. In your case, XP.

I have Windows 2000 on a 60 gig partition using 30 or so with the NTFS file system, would it be safe to resize that partition in order to install a Linux partition ? I did it with reletive ease on FAT32... your thoughts.

I beleive mandrake lets you partition with ease, and yes, ntfs is not a problem.

And moonman steals the thread from Yodashady, lol.
Anyways Yodashady I would recommend getting partition magic 8.0 and partitioning your hd and I would either install knoppix or libranet 2.0 for you since you are new. Mandrake or redhat are also easy to use but personally I don't like them. Once you feel you are getting the hang of linux which in your case might be a few years (lol) then I would recommend something like slackware 9.0

Try Lindows or Redhat.

you dont need partition magic, you can partition from within the install

You can install Knoppix from the original boot CD.... :mellow
Just google up on it...easy to do :wings
Btw, any *nix fans notice the new main page on Knoppix's site? What kinda shit is this? A patent on a god damn bland "ok" button or scroll bar?!? Burn in hell Euro software patents!

Yes, if you've never tried linux, definitely burn a knoppix iso. Boot from that cd and you can try things out without installing them.
If you like, then I recommend Mandrake as your first harddrive install. It can resize ntfs, and it can easily boot itself and windows xp.
When you've advanced a ways beyond that, then I'd say go try Slack or Debian (Libranet).
Check my sig for a nice link to site that describes top distros.

You already have everything you need on the Knoppix CD, you can do a hard drive installation from it which will give you a Debian based fully configured GNU/Linux system. Also It will partition your hard drive allowing you to dual-boot using Win XP. here's how its done ...

not quite a linux newbie but close enough have been using gentoo linux for a few months now..and think its the easiest linux i have ever used...i use that on a different partition to my xp/ntfs
if you need to write to your windows partitions alot from linux fat32 maybe better imo
you can install knoppix on your harddrive pretty easy too..there is a new version of knoppix out that does it a little differently
try search "knoppix hdd harddrive install" or something to that effect and you will probably find the command to type at the root console ctrl-alt F1
