Low ID on LAN computer running WinXP

Hello!

Why is the 2nd computer on the LAN always getting Low ID in emule when the primary one always get High ID?
Primary computer (directly connected to internet via ADSL):
OS: Win98
emule: .30b
emule port settings : tcp = 80, udp = 4667
router or firewall : none that i'm aware of. the telco lent us what
looks like a no-name adsl modem but i'm not sure
if its a router or not

Settings for second computer are:
OS: WinXP
firewall : none
emule: .30b
emule port setting: whatever i try always get low id on every server

My adsl is 128/64. With emule, I get High ID on my primary computer using Win98. However, emule can't seem to d/l more than a few hundred K even with High ID. I've let it sit for almost 24 hours already, everybody just u/l fine from me but d/l just trickles in. Seems that Win98 just doesn't cut it with emule's latest version.

So i tried running emule on my WinXp computer that's also on the same LAN but only sharing internet connection with my win98 one. and voila, d/ling starts almost immediately when i connect. the problem is, i can't get a high id. although d/l starts more promptly than my win98 computer, it is very slow (1k-8kbps max). I normally get 16kbps with kazaa.

My problem is, I don't know what to do next. I don't run emule simultaneously on both computers, just the 2nd one with winxp. But whatever i set on the emule port here, the servers I try to connect always say they can't connect to my port number ### so i get low id.

any more ideas? my adsl modem is a Nokia M5921 (a bridge--according to this document http://www.takas.lt/dsl/filez/spec/nokia1921.pdf). I've read this document but i still don't know if it has a firewall or not and if so, how to forward ports.

Any help will be appreciated.

First, see if the build in xp firewall is on. Disable it by doing this (http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/vpn/firewall.html) .

Next, you probably are firewalled with your router. I looked up google real quick but couldn't find anything. You don't have any manuals or anything that came with the router? It could be the router, but since you don't say that the Win98 gets low id, then it also couldn't be that the router is blocking ports. My best guess is the winxp firewall.

i would guess the xp firewall as well..

another thing win98 is not a good choice to run emule on as it cant handle the amount of multiple connections that 2000/xp can.

#1 - Make sure XP firewall is disabled.

If behind a router, you'll have to forward ports.

I assume you have two PCs behind the router, so in the router settings, you'll have to specify the IP address assigned to that individual machine by the router.

Common example PC #1 - 192.168.0.102

PC #2 - 192.168.0.103

Just examples.

Ok, after you've specified what PC, forward these ports for the following protocols.

port 4662 for TCP

port 4672 for UDP

When done.........

you should connect and recieve a high ID. Note, in certain programs, if they ask you to specify your IP (in the program, not router settings EXAMPLE: DC++), then you must specify your EXTERNAL IP, which is the IP assinged to you by your ISP. But this, you will not have to worry about.

I checked my 2nd computer running winxp and its not firewalled. The primary computer with win98 probably was, because i couldn't get a high id with 4662, so i changed emule tcp port to 80, thats how i got the high id from emule. but this doesn't work with winxp, i wonder why?

the nokia m5921 didn't come with any manuals so i couldn't reconfigure it. i'll see if i can find the cdrom the telco gave me if there's any doc on it.

changing the emule tcp port to 80 or something is so much more painless to do and a no-brainer. it worked for the primary computer, too bad this doesn't work for the winxp one....

This may be the reason emule downloads slowly on your win98 machine.
It is better to use somthing other than port 80 for emule if possible.
Emule traffic won't go through a transparent webcache.
When you set port 80 you somtimes get a false open reading from
servers and you won't be able to exchage files with people who's
ISP uses a tranparent webcache( probably the majority of people).

A false open reading by setting port 80 is worse than being firewalled
because emule tries to shift the data over an incoming connection
and fails.

Somthing on your LAN is doing NAT to share the connection between
several computers. It could be the ADSL modem or it could be the
win98 machine.

Does the win98 machine have to be turned on for the XP machine
to access the internet?

If I remember correctly win98's built in connection sharing
dosn't support port forwarding.

show us the output of ipconfig in a DOS box on both machines.
