best dvd back up software

hello peps hope u can help!!ive got a sony dvd burner and was wondering what is the best back up to dvd-r soft ware out there?? had a look at dvd copy express this looks nice + easy to use+fast but from experence easy+fast not allways the best!!! any views on the this subbject would be very helpfull

I just downloaded DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5. It works great. Its free and definitely worth checking out.

Programs like DVD Shrink are nice and convenient, but CHELSEY12 is right that fast isn't always the best. You can fit a movie onto a DVD-R by transcoding the MPEG-2 stream on the fly with a program like DVD Shrink or DVD X Copy, but you sacrifice quality for speed.

Pinnacle Instant Copy does transcoding a lot slower, but results in better quality.

thanks for the help guys ill give them both a look as time aint an issue for me ill give pinnacle a try first think i'd prefur quality over speed anyday!!! 1 more thing does pinnacle get round copy protection???

The only copy protection on DVDs is CSS.

Easiest thing to do is to use DVD Decrypter to make a full backup of the DVD sans CSS on your hard drive and work with it from there.

If Pinnacle Instant Copy is too much work than CloneDVD is much faster/easier and is a close second in quality as long as you're just backing up the main movie.

1:1 copies often aren't possible because commerical DVD movies can hold about 9 gigs, but recordable DVDs can only hold about 5 gigs.

The first thing i would do is fire up DVD Shrink 3 to see if i could fit the main movie with just the english audio and no subtitles onto a DVD-R with NO COMPRESSION. If it says it'll fit without compressing it, go ahead and re-author it (Guide (http://doom9.org/mpg/dvdshrink3-main.htm)).

If not and DVD Shrink lists a % that I'd have to compress the movie to make it fit, I'd fire up CloneDVD instead and use that to transcode (compress on-the-fly) the main movie so that it is small enough to fit on a DVD-R.

Basically, DVD Shrink is nice, free, easy-to-use software for re-authoring a DVD to see if the main movie with one audio track will fit onto a DVD-R. But the transcoding engine produces shitty/blocky video.
