View Full Version : Winamp 5 Beta 1

Well, this is NOT the leaked alpha, this is an actual beta release from Nullsoft,,,as far as I know anyway :)
So far over the alpha, its using less RAM, and seems to have a bit cleaner sound.
Check out the screenshot, what the hell is that crap???
I like the new version overall, it uses about 12 meg of RAM (could be my DSP plugin). Not much CPU durring playback. It sounds good, supports any kind of winamp skin/plugin ever made, and has some nice features. I think its sad that they're making this previously free player slowly a pay program.

I've been playing with it a bit more, and I'm actually kinda liking it. I've stuck with winamp 2.x skins up to here, but I like the modern skin more. Its compact, easy to navigate/see, and easy to get at visualizations and stuff. Nullsoft actually thought this one through pretty good.

Its one small step untill AOL decides to make it AOL X.0 Exclusive. I would rather use QCD.

Kinda creative I guess. They combined the best features of 2 and 3...

Before people bitch:
From http://members.cox.net/s1138/wa5.html (mirror; Sawg's page is currently down):
Winamp Pro
Why Pro?
In forthcoming versions of Winamp, new features are going to be optionally included which need to be paid for on a per copy basis. As Winamp gets a lot of downloads, it is not viable for Nullsoft to pay for this themselves.
What will I gain from getting Winamp Pro?
Currently you will be able to:
Encode MP3
Rip CDs at full speed
Burn CDs at full speed
Also, in the future other Pro features will be added, for which your Winamp Pro key will work. (Things like DVD Playback, hopefully )
What will I lose from sticking with regular Winamp?
Nothing!
Indeed, you will gain the ability to Rip and Burn CDs at slow speeds, as well as all the other new features in Winamp 5.
I already have a good free CD Ripper/Burner, do I have to have CD Ripping/Burning in Winamp?
No. In the installer, under Audio File Support you can uncheck what you don't want.
Why do I have to pay for MP3 encoding when it uses LAME which is free and open source?
Even though LAME is open source, Nullsoft has to pay per copy to Thompson for a licence to encode MP3. Thompson only offer MP3 encoding licences on a per-copy basis, so unfortunatly it has to be only included in the Pro version.
I paid for the shareware version of Winamp a while back before it went free, why do I have to pay again?
Because this is Winamp Pro. If you paid for the Winamp shareware you can still use Winamp, there is no pressure to upgrade.
Remember, it costs Nullsoft for every single Winamp Pro licence. If Nullsoft could do Winamp Pro for free, they would.
Winamp 2.92 and Winamp 2.95 had free, full speed CD Ripping, what gives?
They were leaked versions never intended for public consumption. This is the reason that they were illegal leaks.

I won't bother cracking it... I like 2.x and I'll be sticking with it.
Oh and to the people about to bitch about them going 'pro' all I can say is go code your own mp3 player or shut the fuck up. Cuz Nullsoft has given out a great proggie for free for awhile now and going pro to cover a few costs isn't a big deal. If you don't want the features go elsewhere! I mean who is really gonna rip with winamp? lmfao I'll stick to EAC....

2.x all the way. and Internet TV? Personally, I thought the internet browser on winamp 2.x and 3 was a bad idea. Now nullsoflt just sounds like it's another company trying to take over your pc with all these media functions, music, video files, streaming media (micro$hit being the first). I just like the winamp that plays mp3's and no more, like Xmms for linux. If you want the rest of the stuff, just get irfanview.

I dont see a problem with Winamp playing other formats than just music. Thats what media players today need to do. Why force everyone to have multiple programs to keep up after play media files.
For anyone who is paranoid about the pro. Winamp did have optional registration a long time ago and its no different than that.

Well im sorry ill wait untill it goes public this release then ill get it
I love Winamp 2.86
Sorry i know thats old but its a good version. Plus my pluggins work with that
Well acctually how much is PRO and AOL will hog it in later life so winamp may die cause of this
Screw AOL take everything good out of the internet now
Plus i do like the cd burning idea but i wanna know how much it will be first

Considering that Nullsoft created gnutella and waste and posted them out on the internet before AOL could stop so i dunno why people are going to be paranoid. Unless they fire all the people that are what makes Nullsoft so great and why they havent so far, then there is no reason to be worried about this at all.
All the plug ins from 2.x work in the beta. and it looks like that its using everything that 2.x did when playing mp3.

agreed, ccs!
it is only evolution. and it does make more sense to have one app do everything u want it to. winamp needs to stay competitive, especially when we look around and everyone and their mother is beginning to charge.
although we r "robin hoods" at heart....most apps don't really cost that much to start with. really, how much do we pay for a kickin' sound system?
and they still have the free edition...so all the options r there.
i'm going to give it a try...i like all of the reviews so far.
and if phalkon likes it....then i respectfully agree to try it! ;)
and thanks Hova for that info!!!!!!!!!!

Nullsoft did not create Gnutella. It was a personal project of Justin Frankel. Why do you think AOL got so bitchy about it.

Your wrong if it was a personal project then why was the plug pulled at all? Also why did alot of the people who work at nullsoft develop it then?
When AOL found out that is when they got "bitchy" about it.

That Pro version is complete bullshit. Anybody who pays for it is a complete and utter ignoramus to the stuff you can do for free.
EAC can rip and burn your cd's into any format at pristine and unparalleled quality. (1mb download, completely free)
LAME, Ogg Vorbis, MPC, and AAC are all available as free encoders at many audio sites. (Rarewares is the best)
Foobar2000 is more than enough for anyone, tagging, management or playback needs with minimal bloat.
Winamp 5 is ok, but come on, its not cutting edge. Don't cream yourselves over the thing.

hey Hova thanks for clearing it up man. It seems some extras are going to be included that would warrant you to want to pay for them. However there are alternatives. I mean i am not saying its a great idea to have a pro version but they are offering features.
It also seems the free version will still be around.
foobar all the way for me for some media files but I will be using this program again. I know how to avoid winamp taking control of all the file associations and at same time keep the ones I want to keep.
heads to get it now hehe good news. Looks awesome.

I downloaded Winamp5 and really like it. The only problem I have is that it doesn't play *.b4s playlist files, which WinAmp3 used as the default playlists type. Is there an easy way to convert the b4s files to m3u/pls or do i have to create dozens of all new playlists all over again?

This isnt a perference thread. This is a Winamp 5 thread about a specific program. If people want to give their preference then they can create a preference thread.
To the question what happened to winamp 4.x's
Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5

If they dont spam other programs then thats fine.
Problem is people do that and its obvious they havent used the program. They are just spouting off problems with past verisons which again has nothing to do with the topic and they are just spamming for some other program.
This has been done elsewheres here too in p2p program threads.. Which is why its not allowed to keep things more neutral.

Winamp 5 doesnt use alot of memory at all then again 10 megs of ram isnt much today. Which winamp 5 uses 2.x for the music playing part of it at least.
This isnt winamp 3, its better. there are visualizations in 2.80 so i dont see why that is a issue.
Then again you didnt upgrade so what would you know about it? Although its still a beta and there is probably some bugs in it but its pretty good so far.
