Lost RAM

I have a total of 256 MB SDRAM. After the Booting of Windows XP PRO and b4 opening any other application, the amount of occupied physical Ram is only 86.7 MB as reported by Norton Utilites' System information program (as it is shown in the shot below) BUT in the same time, the amount of Free Physical RAM which was reported by another small, efficient and trustworthy "RAM Optimizer" program (and which reports to me the amount of free physical RAM i have in real time thru the taskbar as well in addition to its main function) was 50 MB only !!!!!

So now obviously i have about 120 MB which i don't know where are they lost and I am still can't figure it out. I 'll appreciate if someone can work on this puzzle and enlightening me how can i find these lost quantity of RAM to make use of it

P.S. For sure, My PC is free of any virus or spyware and also I tweaked my copy of XP Pro by disabling many useless services + disabling themes...etc and after all of that my free memory is just 50 MB after booting !

I am already using a 1 but i still don't know where's the RAM leak ?

go into the System Properties in the control panel, and see how much RAM windows sees.

if it is the correct amount, and "RAM Optimizer" still has the incorrect amount...

then "RAM Optimizer" is wrong.

you dont think that windows itself is using the ram and therfor you dont have that much more.. Mine on xp takes quit a bit of ram, I installed 512mb.. I still need to install another 512 in the other slots...

By your description, it sounds like you have more than one stick of ram in your machine. RAM does god bad after a certain amount of time, depending on the quality of the product ie. I found a stick of ram (128 pc133) in an old machine and put it in another one of the machines and i only found 96 mb. RAM developes bad sectors just like a hard drive. If they're real old then they have a greater potential to screw up.

but they do count 256 MB literally during the first stage of booting !! Does your system have integrated graphics? Some of the new(er) solutions can share up to 128mb of your RAM. But I don't know if the 128 mb used would be included in the "used" portion of your RAM. Usually on integrated graphics chipsets, when you go to the system properties, it automatically displays the deduced number, i.e. 256 - 128 = 128 is what would display in the system properties.

If it is share memory then the avaible memory for windows would be the total memory avaible minus the amount of memory need for the video, this is why I hate share memory video card because this is the cheap method of having a video card. :tol
If you have 512 MB of memory and your video is setup to take 64 MB of that memory then the total amount of memory left is 448 MB for windows.
But you said that you have a computer with 256 MB, so it could be windows using up the memory up or it could be other programs running in the background like spyware, worms, and/or virus. Have you ran a spyware checker like Ad-aware or what ever program that is out there. Also check for worms and/or virus to with a really good virus checker. If this isn't the problem then check what programs are being loaded at started and disable any that not important.
