Hi all,

I am needing some help setting up my firewall and Winmx 3.22.

I've tried using port forwarding but i've noticed that winmx uses a very large range of ports for udp packets. The log in my firewall shows that i drop udp packets from port 5000 - 10000 in general. I have the setting in the setup to use udp port 5556 and my tcp port 5555. If i set forwarding on port 5000 - 10000 on udp i get outgoing packets dropped. I am boggled by this. My firewall uses NAT and the dropped udp packets have the destination address of my firewalls lan ip. I was also wondering if anyone noticed the very large udp port range that winmx uses. What is the point of entering a udp port if the program uses such a large range?

If anyone has found a way around this i would appreciate some help.

I never paid much attention to the UDP connections on my computer. What's the difference anyway, between UDP and TCP? If you enabled TCP port 6699 but blocked UDP port 6257, what would happen?

Maybe in answer to your question, WinMX assumes that you have a firewall for incoming connections but not for outgoing connections.

What firewall are you using? Ive never had a problem with winmx and my firewall(zone alarm).

ZoneAlarm SUX!!! It actually slows down ur internet connection and causes lag when playing online games. I suggest using Internet Security Systems BLACK ICE DEFENDER. Black Ice doesnt block or filter outgoing traffic (and there is no reason to unless u have a virus (i suggest using anti-virus software frequently)) however it does an amazing job of filtering and blocking every single kind of incomming attack that is known so far. Though Black ICE is not as user friendly as Zone Alarm (its for newbs), it is much better and it wont block stuff that you are trying to do, only stuff that other ppl are trying to do to you. You can easily find a key to Black ICE on the net (using file sharing) and then go to http://www.iss.net/support/consumer/BI_downloads.php and download the latest version with the key u recieved. If any one is interested in finding a key, or cant find a key, IM me and we'll see about hooking u up with one.

Hah dont even start about Black ice the most insecure firewall ....... even Norton Firewall 2003 is stronger than that...... u have any idea how vulnerable to inter-network hacking it leaves u to ?

>very large range of ports for udp packets.

Each packet has two port numbers, the remote port varies but the
local port (on one your machine listens on) stays the same.

Just set up udp forwarding on the single port number that is
set in winmx internet connection settings.

>udp packets have the destination address of my firewalls lan ip
Those are packets coming from your winmx machine, not going to it,
you don't need to forward those packets, they should just go out
through the NAT.

>If you enabled TCP port 6699 but blocked UDP port 6257, what would happen?
If incoming tcp connections work and are enable in settings then you should be able to upload to and download from all winmx users.
If incoming UDP dosn't work then you can't make a primary connection,
your searches have to be routed through someone else who is being a primary.
