Definately an Apple Ipod. They now have a cheap one with like 30 gigs. I have the original model, and it is still amazing. After bringing it to school everyday in my backpack, and leaving it in my gym locker, and dropping it its still in great condition. It's easy to use, and great support and software. The only problem is you have to use MusicMatch Jukebox. And this leads me to my other alternative for you. The Archos. Allthough i haven't tried it I have heard some good things about it. I was considering buying the new model which can record video from, tv, vcr, computer, anywhere. This also comes with a mp3 player, and an add on is a portable camera. I am hesitating to buy this because I still think the technology is a little primative. So definately go for the Ipod for a sleek, easy, great mp3 player, and Archos for a more money efficient player.

I've got the old school mp3 only archos, and its very cool and good, and even better with the open source firmware........but it only has 18 gigs. It says 20 on the package and on the player itself, but its got 18 gigs.

or maybe I need to let scandisk have a go at it....either way, I feel kinda cheated.

I've heard the new models (the super expensive mutimedia kinds that you can watch movies from) are very nice but have very bad battery life. Yeah, that comes with the snazzy new technology, but If you want something like that, do what IshareManyFilez says and wait until the technology really takes off. until then, those nice old style archoses with the mp3 recorder in it are a very good value.

I would seriously consider if you need one. If you do, then you should consider how long you can wait for prices to fall.
If you think prices are fine, then by all means get one!

ipod 30 gig, you prob won't use the 40 gigs, just a waste of 100 bucks. The Creative Nomads are alright. the ipods are exceptional but are slippery and the hard drive is liable to break.

Back about a year ago, I did a lot of research on this and found that the Nomad Jukebox is the best combo of product and price (based on user reviews). The iPod seems to be the best overall, but last time I checked, they were more expensive than the other ones. If you don't mind the larger size, I would go with the Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 20 Gig.

Apple.com has refurbished 2nd generation 20 GB iPods for sale online for $269. Thats a kick ass deal. I hate Apple, but I admit, the iPod is the best mp3 player out there.

PSEven if you get a mac version(which is the ones they are discounting) you can stil use it with your pc.

You can buy an apple ipod or any of it, but are you really going to listen to 30 gigs of music. BUy for 90 dollars, a cd player that plays mp3s on the cd... you already going to have cd-r, that hold 140 songs, and batteries probably will last you longer to, i have a INTEL 128 meg mp3 player, 300 dollars. TOLD My wife i wanted a 20 gig mp3 player that i seen for little less money, batteries go down after 2 days if you listen to about four hours of music.

I hate Cd's the Nomad is a compromise between a MP3-CD and an .mp3 player. It looks like a CD player (the nice one) but plays like an mp3 player

I've got a, slightly old now, pjb-100 (www.pjbox.com) Not sure if they even sell them anymore. It's a bit on the bulky side but with a 20Gb HD it's sweet, you can also upgrade the HD if you need.

Forget iPods. They're way more expensive than the rest of the competition of comparable sizes, and the battery doesn't last as long as many others.

Take a look here for a good roundup.

Frankly, I'd wait a couple of weeks and get a Toshiba Gigabeat G20:

There are a lot of people here advocating the higher-end players, but i've found that the smaller flash-based ones give me plenty of music. They're much smaller and cheaper too. This is mine. It has about two hours of music, and an expansion option & radio.

I bought a first generation Jukebox when they came out - 6 gigs at the time. A year later, I popped in a 30 gig drive. The darn thing is too small now. While the iPod is the nicest player available, it's just not large enough. Heck, if I'd buy a Zen with 60 gigs, I'd fill it the first day. Considering that I'm in the process of ripping another 400 CDs this week (who downloads stuff these days?), I wish there was a 120+ gig player on the market. Anyway, you can never have enough storage capacity! Buy the biggest monster you can get.

And for a good laugh: IFPI Germany (the German counter part to RIAA) wants to limit the right to make personal copies to analog recordings - HAHAHAHA!

Otherwise just go mini-disc.

I've had a 20GB iPod for about 8 months now, I'm fairly satisfied with it. I've had a few problems with reliability - sometimes, the player will lock up in the middle of a song (this is with the latest firmware). EphPod is not the most stable software I've ever used either, but it's better than MusicMatch.

Ideally, I'd like a bit more space - I've got 57GB of music on my computer - but hey, it's not like I'm going to run out of music to listen to any time soon. What I'd really like is support for more audio formats - I've got music in OGG, MPC and APE formats, and considering the thing cost me £370, I think I should be able to play them without having to convert them first. Not having the ability to queue tracks is an absolute pain, although I listen to songs on random play anyway. Gapless playback should have been included too.

If I was in the market for a player, I'd got for the Rio Karma (http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/shop/_templates/item_main_Rio.asp?model=220&cat=53). The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of a Firewire port.

Cheap cd-mp3 player. They wear out about 12 to 18 months, but at cheap prices $30 for a player that reads from a buffer, works better and if you have a large collection of cd-r's, you will be able to play them right from the disc.

Any special recordings, AWAYS play a copy so the original does not get damaged from playing 300 times.

I like the CD/mp3 players because who wants to spend 20 minutes trying to find a song on a 20 gb portable player?

Man, you said it. I've been confused about this for years now. Apple has been charging an arm and a leg for their iPod for years now. They can charge whatever they want because there's only one or two other companies that can even compete with an mp3 player of that caliber.

My friend first told me like three years ago that he had a wireless connection to his car's mp3 player, that he had stuck a 40 gig hard drive on. It was a home made job that probably cost less than what an iPod costs. Then a few months later my friend who is the biggest Apple fanboy you've ever seen started bragging about how Apple had "come up" with a device called the iPod, that let you hold a thousand songs on it. Of course I laughed at him (especially when he told me they cost $500) and told him that they didn't invent it, they just made an improvement on a product, and pretty soon there would be dozens of other companies doing the same thing. 2 years later, Rio comes up with an mp3 player that held 15 GB, but reading the user reviews, everyone agreed it had the worst GUI, and the iPod was infinitely easier with the wheel that lets you quickly fast forward through music, adjust the volume, browse through albums, or songs. Not to mention there were 30 GB iPods at that time, that weighed half as much and were a lot more portable.

Now, Apple has made even more improvements, they have a touch pad wheel, and weighs like 2.5 ounces or something. Apple is still charging whatever they want for it, and looking on eBay, there's still thousands of mp3 players with 128MB (less than a third of a percent of how much the iPod can hold) memory sticks being sold for $150.

The thing is so small and dinky, yet costs as much as a High Definition TV.

I did have some trouble with mine(if you remember I posted about the refurbished iPods). And customer support pissed me off so bad that I wrote a 4 page letter to Apple Corporate office(I might post it later on ZP) So I woldn't buy refurbished.
But still, I'm an isolated case, and iPods kick ass, expecially the new ones. You get what you pay for.

considering your puny cd/mp3 player uses cd's (duh?) it can only hold a maximum of, tada, 700mb (unless you use overburn, then it's 1gb) of mp3's. compare that to a 30 gb ipod.

i have 2.2gb of mp3's. so you're telling me, it's faster to pull out your cd, put in a new one and find the song, than it is for me to navigate a few menus on my ipod?

doubtful.

besides, this is why god made the playlist.

I' pushing this a step further by saying as long as a bottom of the range mp3 player cost over £20 I wont be happy. Sorry isus. Plug in memory can cost extra at that price, but headphone only cost £few, then you need a piece of plastic that decodes mp3s. Why cant I bye a device of a few quid that replaces my car stereo? Then I can plug my memory stick into either my car or portable player. This should be childs play by now. The cheapest CD car stereo I can find is £60, complete with moving parts, decoder and buttons. I'm asking for the same without moving parts.

Don't get hung up on sleek MP3 players. MP4 Video technology is now the way to go. I just got a brand new archos av340, 40 gigs. And am probaly going to slide in a 80 gig hd, when the 40 runs out. The Archos is an amazing product. Not only can you take videos from your computer {divx, and xvid}, but you can record video from any source on the fly. With not a single bad pixel, mp4 technology is definately a great buy.

The best mp3 player is I believe is the newer archos jukebox, they have to different versions, a multimedia and a fm tuner and recorder. The fm tuner is fantastic cause I can listen to the radio in bed and if there's a song I like, but don't know the name of it, I can record it right off the radio and listen to it over again, and as an added bonus feature they have on the jukebox is a USB hardrive which I have also used and it works real well too. The price I paid for this excellent mp3 player was just $199.95 at bestbuy.

i've just come and found this thread while looking through the forum and i am shocked that no one has mention a iRiver player.

Because your mainly talking about HDD players, the ihp - 100 and 120 seem like ones you would be interested in.

You are gonna moan about them only having 10gb and 20gb (respectivly) but they have a lot of features.

http://www.iriver.com/product/info.asp?p_name=iHP-120

the best part for me has to be the UMS support, you don't have to use any software (if you so wish) to transfer files to the player (via super fast USB2.0)

it can record, has fm tuner, plays ogg, mp3, wav and asf and lots more

www.austinv.com is a great site for reviewing these players, i read the ihp 100 review and am just waiting for my ihp 120 to arrive in the post. I bought it through the website and a communal buy scheme for only £290 (normally a huge £350 or US$350 in the US sites)

also www.cnet.com had a great round up of these players (ipod and ihp 120 got the highest score (8.7))

Sadly the black version is only available in the US and asia. :(
