Are you allowing WinMX to act as a server? If not, do it.

Yes I'm allowing WINMX to act as a server, this hasn't made any difference!

You need to allow TCP and UDP connections on the ports specified in your WINMX setup. I believe the defaults are TCP:6699 and UDP:6257. It's a good idea to change the default port numbers to something else in your WINMX configuration. This will prevent your ISP from blocking these ports due to the large volume of data passing through them from all the WINMX users. Any two numbers above 6000 will do. For example TCP:8000 and UDP:9000. You DON'T have to do this, but if you do the automatic setup feature of WINMX will not work. You will have to manually setup WINMX by specifying the ports you chose. The easy way is to leave the port numbers alone and setup WINMX automatically. But I regress.
The answer to your problem is, as I stated earlier, you need to configure Zonealarm to allow data on the ports of choice. Here's how to do it.
1. Double click the zonealarm icon in your system tray.
2. You should now have a Zonealarm window on your screen. On the far left side of the window click on "Firewall"
3. On the "Internet zone security" section click on the "Custom" button.
4. A window will pop up that says "Custom Firewall Settings". Scroll down the window until you see "Allow incoming UDP ports."
5. Check the small box next to it. When you do, a box will appear near the bottom of that window. It will say "Ports"
6. Type the number you chose for your UDP port. If you used WinMX default setup type 6257.
7. Go back to the check boxes and check "Allow outgoing UDP ports."
8. Once again in the "Ports" box near the bottom of the screen type in the same UDP port number you typed the first time.
9. Go back to the check boxes and check "Allow incoming TCP ports."
10. In the ports box near the bottom of the window type in your TCP port number. Default WinMX is 6699 or the number you chose.
11. Click "OK", send Zonealarm back to the system tray
12. You might want to re-setup WinMX to make sure everything works. Or go to "Settings" in WinMX and put in your port numbers.
You're Done!
Hope this helps. Share with you soon.

Curbby is right definately follow those directions, even if you are gonna use the secondary connection.

But you still will have a problem with winmx set to the primary connection it will draw system resources until it freezes,

I have had this happen on 6 different computers (friends & relatives) with different config, all of these systems are more than capable of handling the primary connection but all of them freeze.

my question is how many Winmx users set their program for primary connection?
If so please share any tweaks you might have done to prevent freeze up,

somebody out there has to be running the primary connection with out any problems otherwise the wpnp net would not function properly.

Curbby,

Thanks for your help I have tried what you suggested with Zone alarm pro to no avail. I'm still using a secondary connection!

It's definetly the firewall as I've shut the firewall down and hey presto I can get a Primary connection no problem whatsoever, this was only to test out whether I could get a primary connection as I would never shut down my firewall protection completely.

And as psychotronic420 stated in his response, my system just freezes after a few minutes regardless of what I try to do to obtain a primary connection.

ANY OTHER TIPS GUYS??

I use Tiny Personal Firewall, and I have it set to allow WinMX to send/receive TCP & UDP on any port. Perhaps you could try configuring your firewall to do the same?

I have the free version of Zone Alarm and have trouble running WinMX. It doesn't seem to get any search results and is just very slow overall clicking on anything in the program in any window. Any ideas. No previous version of WinMX had a problem running with Zone Alarm.

How many other apps are you running while using winmx? Primary or Secondary conn? You might be using up all your resources so everything is very slow.
